Running for Abigail

Saturday, July 31st, 2010
Laura Woodward is mum to two boys Jake (6) and Theo (4) who attend Holy Trinity Primary School, where Toby Cox is about to move up into Year 1 from Reception. Laura has taken the huge step of entering the Bristol Half Marathon this September, running to raise funds for 8 year old Abigail Newton Smith who, like Toby, has Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. Also like Toby, Abigail is trying to raise the £36,000 necessary to undergo an operation in St Louis, America which will give her the chance to walk unaided.

Laura has never run such a distance before, having started running for fitness earlier this year and originally setting herself the target of the Bradley Stoke 10k, which she achieved in an amazing time of just under the hour. Having achieved this goal she was toying with the idea of the half marathan, but was really unsure whether or not she would be able to make the distance. Laura says “When Jaci (Matters editor) mentioned Abigail’s story, it was the push I needed to decide to enter the half marathon. I always felt I wanted to do more to help Toby, and having followed his mum’s blog during his trip to America, which quite often brought tears to my eyes, I really want to help give Abigail the same chance of this life-changing operation“.

Laura has started running regularly with local group “Soul Sisters” and is aiming to try and keep running for the whole 13.1 miles. As a working single mum, trying to find the opportunity to train can be difficult at times, but family and friends are all helping to lend a hand and the boys are rightly proud of their mum’s efforts and determination. See below for how to support Laura in her fundraising campaign for Abigail.

Laura says: “People who know me well, will know that running a half marathon will not come easy, I have been training hard but still have much to do…, I hope that you will all support me, or should I say support Abigail…I am running on behalf of a special eight year old girl Abigail, to raise money for an operation which will change her life forever. For further details and to sponsor me, please visit www.footsteps4abigail.com/bristolHM.html and sponsor Laura

Bailey’s Court Primary School Turns Green!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

If you had visited Bailey’s Court Primary School on Wednesday 14th July, instead of being greeted by the usual sea of red uniforms you would have been greeted by a sea of ‘green’. As part of the drive to make their school a greener place, the pupils in the school’s ‘Green Team’ had organised a Green Day and to help mark the occasion had encouraged their fellow pupils to wear something green to school that day. It was a huge success and the children raised £266.79 to fund more green projects at their school!

Bailey’s Court Primary School’s ‘Green Team’ is part of the Eco-Schools’ international initiative that has been set up to assist schools in their goal to become greener. The team usually meet once a fortnight to discuss what they can do to make their school more environmentally friendly. It was at one of these meetings that the pupils voted to organise a Green Day and the date was set.

The school day started off with an assembly by the Green Team but the green work had started before that as pupils had been encouraged to walk, scoot or cycle to school and despite the rain the children were not put off! Electricity was kept to a minimum as classes worked without the lights on and used the interactive white boards much less than usual.

In addition to being ‘greener’, many classes also undertook learning about eco topics and the whole event linked well with the school’s topic for the term, ‘Sharing the Planet’. Some of the fantastic activities included designing an eco school; making bug homes; using recycled materials to make pen holders; and creating a storyboard based on a book about the environment.

The gardening clubs ran a market garden stall after school to sell off some of the produce they had grown throughout the year to parents and teachers. It was very successful and raised money for more gardening projects in the future.

At the end of Green Day the classes each made a ‘green pledge’ to continue their eco work in the future. These pledges, along with more information on what the ‘Green’ pupils of Baileys Court Primary School have accomplished can be viewed on the Green Team’s section of school’s website: www.baileyscourt.com

Three Peaks is a piece of cake for local chef

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Mark Brooks, 28, of Bradley Stoke has just completed the Three Peaks Challenge with a mere seven minutes to spare. Mark, who has been chef at Thornbury Golf Club for 10 years, raised an estimated £1,500 for the Parkinson’s Disease Society, smashing his target of £1,000.

The charity is one that is close to Mark’s heart as his father Jim has suffered from Parkinson’s for more than a decade. “It is such a great feeling to have completed the task and raised so much money for the charity”, said Mark. “There were times when I was quite sick and I was really struggling, but then I thought of all the people who had backed me, and I just did not want to let them down, so I battled through it.”

The gruelling Three Peaks Challenge requires participants to climb the UK’s three highest mountains, Ben Nevis in Scotland, England’s Scafell Pike and Snowdon in Wales, in just 24 hours. Mark completed his feat in 23 hours 53 minutes, thanks to a mad dash up Snowdon in 80mph winds.

A 10-month rigorous training regime prepared Mark for the feat with road running, gym work and some training runs up Snowdon and Ben Nevis. But the hardest part for the chef was watching what he ate as he was on a strict diet. “I had to eat extremely healthily in the build up to the challenge, lots of salad and no fatty foods, which is very hard for a chef when I’m surrounded by food all day,” he joked.

Graham Marshall, Thornbury Golf Centre general manager, said: “Everyone at the centre is extremely proud of Mark’s achievement and we’re all delighted that he beat his target of £1,000. He had a lot of support from all of the staff and golfers at Thornbury and he did not let us down. Well done Mark.”

Mark had fantastic support from a number of people and organisations to complete his feat and would like to thank Plas Cocu Guest House, and members of Little Stoke Social Club, Thornbury Golf Centre, Stokes Medical Centre and Hogdeson & Kearney Financial Services for their generous sponsorship.

To congratulate Mark and to celebrate his achievement, staff at Thornbury Golf Centre presented him with a special ‘Three Peaks’ cake.

Community Children take over the Park!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Designed entirely by 528 local children, young people and adults; two years of hard work; 324 hours of voluntary work; and 28 meetings later, the Trust Ground Improvement Group (TGIG) have been successful in gaining funding to build a new community play space at the Trust Ground, on North Road in Stoke Gifford, using Big Lottery Fund and Groundwork UK’s Community Spaces funding of £49,000.

The group are delighted to let the diggers roll, next month, to see a tired play space replaced by a positive natural community space for 0-90yr olds. The tireless efforts of the TGIG have worked in partnership with the Trust Committee, Southern Brooks Community Partnership’s Community Development Worker and Stoke Gifford Parish Council, through their Green Spaces Strategy.

The play space complies with the National Play Strategy 2007 and Play England’s principles to enable challenging play in a social environment offering motivational play. The group plan to launch this great space in October as an example of a community deciding on the needs of their community and taking joint action for the benefit of the community.

Congratulations TGIG for your efforts and we look forward to seeing the fruits of your labours later this year! If you are interested in running a community project of your own, visit Community Spaces on www.community-spaces.org.uk or phone 0845 3671 671.

Jubilee Green Park Celebrates 1st Anniversary

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Local children joined The Friends of Jubilee Green this afternoon in celebrating the first anniversary of the park.

The Friends, a local group of volunteers, put on a range of free craft activities, refreshments (generously provided by Starbucks), prizes and goody bags (kindly provided by Tesco and Bradley Stoke Matters). Children of all ages enjoyed decorating crowns and creating pictures showing their favourite equipment in the park, while parents and carers looked on and enjoyed hot drinks in the Woodlands Suite of the Jubilee Centre.

The event culminated in a parade around the park of over 30 children wearing their crowns and following Chair of The Friends, Michelle Dent. Michelle carried an impressive birthday cake which depicted a typical scene from the park. Given the number of children at the event, there was a huge sigh of relief when it was realised that there was indeed enough cake to go around!

Children were delighted to receive a free goody bag and they then enjoyed some parachute games led by The Woodcraft Folk, a local children’s group which meets weekly at Meadowbrook Primary school on Wednesday evenings.

One Mum, Tracy, commented: “What a lovely event. The park is a great place for my children to play and it’s even better when there are extra activities like this. My children have had a lovely time and I’d like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to the volunteers who organised this celebration.”

Matters Magazines was there to capture the whole event in photos – see our flickr pages for some great shots!

‘Matters’ celebrates 5 years of being ‘in the community for the community’

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010
We are celebrating this month having been “In the Community, For the Community” now for 5 years. This time has simply flown by and, from humble beginnings, we have be fortunate enough to grow significantly, with the latest issue of Bradley Stoke Matters being the biggest issue to date !

We feel very proud for having been able to help numerous groups come together and grow over this time, as well as putting like minded individuals in touch with one another and really helping to encourage community cohesion. The success of the magazines, which is entirely funded by the advertisers and backed up by our community website, has enabled us to give approximately £10,000 back into community groups, schools and projects so far. At the recent Bradley Stoke festival alone we helped support 15 different groups and have been able to help fund an additional two local activities since this time.

We have really enjoyed bringing you all the community news and meeting so many local residents at all the events and activities that goes on across the area. We look forward to continue doing so in the years to come and hope you all agree that Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke and Stoke Gifford really do MATTER!

“No Cold Calling” zones launched in Yate – Do you want one in your area?

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Cold callers are being frozen out in Yate thanks to a new initiative between South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards and Avon and Somerset Police. “No Cold Calling Zones” have been launched in parts of the town in a bid to help reduce doorstep crime. They have been set up by Trading Standards officers with support from police and local Neighbourhood Watch schemes.

Doorstep crime can range from rogue home improvement firms, to bogus officials and charities. The first No Cold Calling Zones are being introduced in the Walton Heath and Ferndown areas in Yate. No Cold Calling Zones are identified by street signs and stickers on the front doors of houses. Residents are provided with advice on how to say “no” to unwanted callers and also encouraged to report callers who ignore the zones to trading standards or the police.

If an area is interested in a particular area becoming a No Cold Calling Zone, they are advised to contact the council’s trading standards department.

The No Cold Calling Zones scheme does not prevent all callers. Utility services staff, registered charity collectors and canvassing politicians can still do so. As can traders involved in door to door selling if they have made a prior appointment.

For more information on the No Cold Calling Zones scheme, contact Charlotte Allard or Kevin Evans at South Gloucestershire Council’s Trading Standards department on 01454 864419.

Call from Public Leads to four Arrests: Police Bulletin

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Police have praised a member of the public who reported seeing people acting suspiciously at a house in Bradley Stoke in the early hours today, Monday July 12 2010.

Four men were arrested nearby within 10 minutes of the call. A 28-year-old man and three teenagers aged 18, 17 and 15 remain in police custody.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Clive Johnson said: “We rely on this sort of information from the public to help us keep our streets safe. There are some simple steps we can all take to deter thieves from targeting our homes.”

  • Mark your property with your postcode and register valuables on the national property database at www.immobilise.com. This deters thieves because it helps police prove property has been stolen, as well as increasing your chances of getting it back should the worst happen.
  • Make sure fences and gates are sturdy with good quality fittings
  • Use a good quality padlock to secure your shed
  • Make sure ladders and tools are secured otherwise a thief could use them to break into your home

There’s more home security advice on the police website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk

Play to success at Holy Family School

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Holy Family School in Stoke Lodge are delighted to have achieved their Platinum Play award. The school is one of just three schools in the country to have achieved this prestigious award. Dawn Breeze, the Head Teacher, is delighted that the school’s hard work with their play developments has been recognised.

The school’s playtimes have been transformed from being mainly football dominated to a fun-filled, vibrant, exciting place to be! The children have lots of opportunities to build dens, dress up and use their imaginations with the ‘play pod’ equipment that they have had since September. The school has also recently had some brand new play developments, including a stone circle with fire pit, an outdoor stage, a bird watching tower with a climbing wall and a giant story telling throne.

The children definitely give their new inspiring playtimes the thumbs up with Danielle Collins, aged 11, stating, “It is fun and exciting” and Ellie Gregory exclaiming, “I don’t feel limited at playtimes anymore!”

Bradley Stoke’s Olympic Run

Friday, July 2nd, 2010
BSCS Students and teachers

Raring to go! The beginning of the 'Olympic Run' around Bradley Stoke

In celebration of National Sports Week and to promote working closely with their neighbouring schools, Bradley Stoke Community School organised two Olympic Runs on the afternoon of Thursday 1st July.

PE Teacher Ed Owen and seven Year 9 students ran with two specially hand-made ‘olympic torches’ to each of Bradley Stoke’s six primary schools in turn. Abbie Pearce, Duncan Bendall, Manga Ndlovu, Kate Brown, Sean Fahay, Jamie Williams and Will Macaulay set off from BSCS at 1.30pm on their 6+mile challenge.

Pupils and staff at St Mary’s Primary School gave the group a fabulous loud welcome, with cheers and by forming a human horseshoe for the runners to perform a lap of honour. The entourage collected two St Mary’s pupils, Tasha Draper and Nathan Hall, both in year 6, plus a chaperone , and continued their run to Baileys Court. Pupils from Baileys Court lined both sides of their playing field, clapping and cheering and enabling the runners to arrive in style. The pace had been so fast that the group were ahead of schedule, so a few impromptu races were held between the secondary school pupils and between the St Mary’s and Baileys Court pupils. The crowd went wild!

Heidi Sermulins and George Curnock, both in year 6, joined the run at Baileys Court, and continued with the BSCS students on to Meadowbrook. As they rounded the corner the group could hear the enthusiastic clapping and cheerig, and they were welcomed onto the school field with a massive human circle to run through, lined on both sides by pupils. The olympic torches were passed on to Sadelle and Jack , both in year 5 who could not wait to start their leg of the journey.

At Wheatfield there was yet more cheering, plus an impresssive Mexican wave from the whole school on the playground. Not content with putting two children forward for the event, Wheatfield produced 5 runners: year 6 Adam Thorpe and Matthew Farrant; year 5 Rebecca Halford and Emily Smart plus year 4 Matthew Binding. All 5 enjoyed the 0.8 mile run to Holy Trinity (they had looked up the distance so knew what they were letting themselves in for!)

Sports Day was in full flow at Holy Trinity school when the group arrived, though this did not dampen the welcome given. The runners enjoyed a lap of honour inside a human circle on the playground, before picking up the new team members Dominic Williams-Sarkar and Tasha Okoye. At this stage the year 9 runners were beginning to tire, so the year 6′s had to be asked not to run too fast for fear of leaving the older pupils behind!

On arrival at Bowsland Green, the last of the 6 primary schools, year 9′s took the opportunity to lie down on the grass for 2 minutes – but were soon on their feet again taking part in a couple of sprinted laps around the playing field – much to the delight of all the onlookers. Tejaswi Tiruvuru and Ben Sayers, both in year 6, took the olympic torches and joined the team for the final leg of the challenge back to BSCS. By this time, everyone was grateful to PE teacher, Ian Henry, who showed them a short-cut down through the Three Brooks Nature Reserve.

The team arrived back at BSCS to cheers from fellow students just after 3pm – well ahead of schedule and enthused by the experience. Tejaswi from Bowsland Green summed up everyone’s thoughts when she said “That was tiring but great fun!”

Bradley Stoke Matters followed the whole event with a camera (by bike) and you can see a range of photos of the whole challenge on our flickr album.

Wheatfield Pupils

Wheatfield Pupils set the pace for BSCS students to keep up!

At the same time a Senior Olympic Run took place, with BSCS pupils and a member of staff taking their own olympic torch between the schools in the Concorde Partnership – from Bradley Stoke to Patchway, to Filton High and back to BSCS.

The events were a great success, and culminated in a joint schools cross country festival in the late afternoon involving pupils in years 3 to 6. Congratulations to Dena Young and Ed Owen for organising such a great day!

We are pleased to have posted a full set of photographs depicting the challenge from beginning to end on our Flickr photo album. Do feel free to have a browse.

BSCS Performing Arts Success

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Congratulations to all the students and staff involved in Bradley Stoke Community School’s latest performing arts festival. Bradley Stoke Matters was proud to sponsor this event.

High quality variety shows were held on two consecutive nights, featuring the best of the talent at the school. Acts ranged from the school band, piano, drum and guitar solos to the rhythmic Samba band, vocal acts and groups.

The school’s timely performance of the music from Match of the day was appreciated by the audience, and attendees commented on the high calibre of all the acts.

Year 9′s Ashley, Manga and Ben gave a moving performance of their tribute song to fellow student, Ryan Ahrahams, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Polly Kent, the school’s music teacher who organised the event, thanked the Performing Arts Team for their tireless support of all the students involved.
