BSCS Students Design Charity Competition Leaflet

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Students at Bradley Stoke Community School have been invited to design an eye catching leaflet that will be widely used to promote a competition run by The Forest of Avon Trust.

The winning leaflet will be used to promote the Forest of Avon Trust’s competition and its great prizes, appeal to varied audiences and encourage as many people as possible to enter into their draw. With this task in hand, students of BSCS created some excellent examples making the decision to select just one very difficult.

On Thursday 31st March 2011, 3 students were chosen to have their designs shortlisted. Connor Loughlin, Nimisha Mistry and Sean Watts are all from class 10P. The winner will be selected on Tuesday 5th April 2011 – watch this space for an announcement of the winner!

British Championship Success

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

The highly successful Bradley Stoke Judo club (BSJC) has had an outstanding weekend of success at the British Schools Judo Championships in Sheffield. The hugely competitive national event saw over 450 school pupils aged 10-18 compete in their age and weight categories.

The club fielded 12 players and were astounded to win 8 medals. 5 Golds and 3 Bronzes. British Championship Gold Medals were won by brothers, Ben and Toby Attwood, Elissa Britton, Hannah Pitt and Tasha Okoye. Bronze medals were also won by Jack Reeves, Kelly Wilson and Eli Britton.

Head Coach Peter Douglas was bursting with pride for his players but was quick to point out that their success was due to a combination of a number of factors – dedicated training, exceptional club teamwork, persistent personal application and enthusiastic vocal support from the army of friends and family supporters. “Every single BSJC competitor gave it their all. There is plenty more to come from everyone especially those that did really well but did not win a medal on this occasion.”

The family friendly club is well on it way to challenging last years record breaking medal haul. Earlier on in the year Pete Douglas won gold at the Eurometropole Masters Championships in Lille, France and Ben Papuca won gold at the Headmaster conference for independent schools.

The club is now preparing to take a team of nearly 20 youngsters to compete in the Tournoi International de Grisolles in France in June.

Entries Now Open for 2011 Bradley Stoke 10k

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Applications are now invited for the annual Bradley Stoke 10k Run, organised by women’s running group Sole Sisters as part of the Bradley Stoke Festival weekend. This year’s run takes place on Sunday 12 June, with a slightly earlier start time of 9.30am.

Starting and finishing at the Jubilee Centre, the 10k officially measured route is mainly off-road, utilising the multi-terrain tracks and footpaths of Bradley Stoke which cross the town’s conservation areas. The local Beat Team will be on hand to assist with traffic control on any road-crossing points. The run is open to anyone over 16 years of age and all abilities are welcome! There are more categories this year with prizes being awarded to: the 1st Bradley Stoke resident, 1st, 2nd and 3rd for both Male and Female, Veterans Male and Female (over 40, 50, 60 and 70+ categories). We are told that there is one Veteran Bradley Stoke resident who has competed every year that Sole Sisters has organised the event. He runs for St Peters Hospice and the Sole Sisters are pleased to accept his application with no charge in recognition of his achievement and as a small donation towards his cause.

The number of runners is limited to 500 and this year’s nominated local charity is again the Nicola Cory Support Foundation. The NCSF does an excellent job supporting families who have a mother or a father suffering from cancer and is named after a young mum from Bradley Stoke, who’s sister is also a member of Soles Sisters, so a charity very close to home, see www.nscf.org.uk for more info.

After the popularity of last year’s post-race leg massages, Sole Sisters are very pleased that Bradley Stoke Physio will once again be at the finish line! There will also be a Technical T Shirt and goody bag for all finishers. Entrance forms can be downloaded from the new Soles Sisters website www.solesistersrc.co.uk. Matters Magazines are pleased to be supporting this year’s 10k.

Bradley Stoke Community Radio Gearing Up for Live Broadcast !

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Bradley Stoke Community Radio are now gearing up for the live broadcast.  Friends at BCfm 93.2 have provided their expertise, training, support and encouragement to put the BSCR team in a position where they now have the skills (well almost) to broadcast live. BCfm 93.2 are a talented bunch – check out their website for a glimpse at the level of service they provide. BSCR members who received training from BCfm last month are now cascading this training to the latest Bradley Stoke Radio members.

Want to help but don’t have any spare time? There are still a few equipment needs which could be fulfilled by spending more of the grant and sponsorship money received to date. However, if you or anyone you know has recently acquired a new computer and are wondering what to do with the old one… BSCR would be particularly grateful for USB mice and keyboards, a couple of screens and an external hard drive or two.

Want to help and do have some spare time? For every presenter who is in front of the microphone at least one person is needed behind the scenes. The organisation required to put a radio station together is quite staggering and as the broadcast gets closer, this work (all being done by volunteers) is starting to pile up. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:* Marketing * Press Releases * A Treasurer * Newsletter Production Person * Another ‘Finance’ Person * Advertising Coordinator * Meeter/Greeters * Event Organisers and people to man the stand at events.

In the next few weeks the team expect to have ‘online-streaming’ capability – simply put, that means an internet radio service can be provided that runs 24/7, 365 days of the year. The person responsible for this will need a small team to make sure this next stage of the website development is successful!!

The members of the Bradley Stoke Community Radio Association would like to thank all their supporters and sponsors to date and look forward to welcoming more interested people to team …. watch this space for updates!

For more information and details on how to get in touch with the team see their website.

Bradley Stoke Matters is very pleased to be supporting Bradley Stoke Community Radio.

New Season at Bradley Stoke Bowls Club – New Members Welcome

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Matters Magazines is very pleased to be supporting the Bradley Stoke Bowls Club this year, whose new season starts in April. There are over 130 fixtures arranged so far, including friendly games, mixed couples, ladies only, men competitions, as well as league matches and inter-club knockout competitions.

It is the second season for the new ‘Bradley Stoke Bowls Club’ which opened last April utilising the green and facilities at the Baileys Court Acitivty Centre. Bradley Stoke Town Council have supported the group by heavily subsidising the Club’s first year. In addition the club has been awarded a grant from South Gloucestershire County Council to be used for the purchase of new equipment to train new bowlers and the club wishes to record its grateful thanks for this generous gift.
Husband and wife Mark and Sue Arnold are now active committee members for the club, having been complete beginners at the game when they joined last April. Sue tells us that the club has a great atmosphere and a really good social element. The Club is proud to be able to offer, free of charge, the services of Mr Jim Gregory who is a qualified Level 2 coach and a member of the Gloucestershire Coaching who will teach you the basics of the game and also help improve your technique as you progress.

The Bowls Club is keen to invite new members to the club and there is a open meeting this Thursday, 31st March starting at 7pm and anyone interested in learning more about the club is welcome to go along. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, or listen to some of the other members and see if it is something you would like to join in with. Membership forms will be available on the night. Yearly subscription is just £50 per member and there is a nominal fee per match of £1.50 to cover tea and biscuits. The majority of the current members are aged 50+, but Sue and Mark are keen to stress that people of all ages and all backgrounds are welcome. They have players in their 30s and 40s right up to the eldest member who is 89! The new website is now up and running, so you can get more information on the club by visiting their website where this year’s fixtures are also listed. The first game is scheduled for 17th April.

Mayfest Bristol – Your Chance to Participate with Artist Dora Garcia

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

The Arnolfini art centre in Bristol is currently developing a project as part of Mayfest that may be of interest to people in the Bradley Stoke and surrounding communities. The Mayfest festival takes place across Bristol 5-15 May (http://www.mayfestbristol.co.uk) and the centre is working with the Spanish artist Dora Garcia to create a project called Rezos (Prayers): Bristol. Dora is looking for a small number of Bristol based people who might be interested in participating in her project.

If you are interested in working with an Internationally significant artist to take part in a new site specific online project in Bristol, then see below for more details or contact Sarah Warden here by 1 April. Ten people will be placed in different parts of Bristol at different hours of the day on Sat 7 May with the challenge to describe everything they see and hear. These descriptions, recited like prayers, will delve into the people, attitudes, architecture, habits, sounds, smells and impressions of Bristol.

All ten audio recordings will then be available for download, to listen, reproduce and combine online from 9 May at http://doragarcia.org/rezos/bristol
Dora García has been chosen to represent Spain in the 2011 Venice Biennale.

All participants will need to attend a briefing session on either Thurs 7 April at 6.30pm or Fri 8 April 10.30am with the artist, as well as be available on the 7 May for the event. Previous performance experience is not essential.

Dora García’s work features different media including film, video, photography and performance. She often uses texts and stories as a basis for scenarios which raise complex ethical and moral questions, and which yet remain entertaining and witty. The analysis of paradigms and conventions of art is a central motif in García’s works.

Free Arts Festival

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Matters Magazines is delighted to be supporting a first-of-its-kind free Arts Festival taking place at the end of April.

Two free exhibitions of science-inspired art opens in Bristol

Friday, March 25th, 2011

This weekend sees the opening of two exhibitions of science-inspired art in Bristol, all part of the University of Bristol’s Changing Perspectives series.
Changing Perspectives is a series of FREE public exhibitions, talks, workshops and performances that explores the fascinating connections between art and science. We’ll be seeing what happens when fiction meets cell biology, when glass-blowing meets virology, when chaotic systems meet crochet and when medicine meets art.

The Changing Perspectives exhibition at the Grant Bradley Gallery [1 St Peter’s Court, Bedminster Parade, BS3 4AQ, Saturday 26 March until Saturday 30 April 2011] will offer a vibrant display of art inspired by the life sciences and medicine, including medical student and patient reflections, biomedical research images as art, an installation of research-inspired fiction, and chances for you to share your perspectives on the body. The exhibition includes internationally-renowned artist Luke Jerram’s glass sculptures of virus particles, and a life-sized, glowing and pulsating glass brain from artist Richard Box. Connections to neuroscience and cell biology appear again through a network of knitted neurons, and a stunning series of artistic research images, taken by scientists in the University’s Faculty of Veterinary and Medical Sciences. The human side of the life sciences and medicine is explored through science-inspired fiction from Bristol-based author Tania Hershman, and through sensitive and moving reflections on life as a medic from University of Bristol medical students.

This is followed by a second exhibition of art inspired by the physical sciences and mathematics. The Changing Perspectives exhibition at the Bristol Gallery [Millennium Promenade, Harbourside, BS1 5TY, Friday 1 April until Saturday 30 April 2011] will explore the complex worlds of mathematics, physics and physical geography through a stunning range of sculpture, drawings, film and animation, and photography. The exhibition will feature work by Emma Stibbon, mathematicians Hinke Osinga and Bernd Krauskopf, sculptor Benjamin Storch, photographer and film-maker Chrystal Cherniwchan and scientific glass artist, Richard Box.

The accompanying talks and workshops bring together the perspectives of artists and scientists on topics such as ‘Fragility’, ‘Inspired engineering’, ‘Where art meets medicine’ and an open mic night of ‘science-inspired fiction’. Maggie Leggett, Head of the University’s Centre for Public Engagement, said: “Changing Perspectives offers members of the public a chance to get involved with an exciting series of events which explore the relationships between art and science. Staff and students at the University of Bristol have long pursued science-art conversations and collaborations as a way to open up new ways of thinking about their work. The results of those collaborations are often exciting, authentic and moving pieces of art. By sharing that work and those conversations with the public, we want to see what new ideas might emerge and to spark new insights for all.”

The event has been organised by the University of Bristol’s Centre for Public Engagement, with funding from the Institute of Physics [IOP] and support and contributions of students, academics and artists from within and outside the University. All Changing Perspectives events are free and open to the public. Booking details for events are available on the Changing Perspectives website.

Wheatfield’s Wild about Nature! Launch Event this Saturday 26th March

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

The local community around Wheatfield Primary School in Bradley Stoke are being invited to join pupils, staff and parents from 11 am this Saturday, 26th March, to celebrate the launch of a new one year project that will help improve the local environment and enhance the area for wildlife. The project has received a grant of £9,450 from the Big Lottery Fund and £2,500 from the ‘Friends of Wheatfield School’.

The Mayor of Bradley Stoke, Cllr Ben Walker, will officially launch the start of the project by sending families off on a special ‘Bike it’ ride around the Town’s local nature reserve. Within the school grounds there will be an opportunity to get involved in a spring time treasure hunt and to build your own bird box and feeder. There’s also a chance to sow a sunflower seed and enter the tallest sunflower in Wheatfield’s competition! Refreshments and BBQ will also be available throughout the event.

“Building on our Outdoor Play and Learning Project, our school aims to embark on an exciting journey which will engage pupils, parents and our local community in a range of innovative projects that will see our local environment improved, benefiting wildlife and people’s well being”; commented Chris Dursley , Headteacher of Wheatfield Primary School. She added, “Starting with a launch event, we will invite local residents to come along and join our year long project, allowing us a unique opportunity to open the doors of our school to local residents to share in planned activities throughout the four seasons!”

Cllr Ben Walker, Mayor of Bradley Stoke, welcomed the funding and the innovative project that aims to make closer links with local residents and the school. He said “It’s wonderful to see our local schools taking an active part in helping to improve our local environment and getting children involved in educating parents on how to ‘green up’ our gardens is a fantastic idea!”.

John Morris, local resident and Chairman of a local community allotment, who helped secure the funding said, “The project includes making bird boxes and feeders for the school grounds and people’s gardens, hedge laying and dry stone walling training courses, so local householders can manage native hedges in their own gardens. We’ll also be focusing on a wildlife gardening project, raising people’s awareness of slug pellet free gardens, benefiting hedgehogs and frogs and creating wildflower meadows”.

The scheme will see the school work with a local conservation group to improve two local ponds, create new benches from carved timber and develop a mini nature trail. There will be activities throughout the year for the school and its wider community to participate in, including a special Apple Day event in October.

For further information on how you can get involved please call Wheatfield School on 01454 868610.

Patchfactor Show Raises Record £450 For Charity

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

“Patchfactor: the ultimate winners show” was an amazing success on Wednesday.

Organised by the students from Yr13, with support from some staff members, the show was able to show off the amazing talent that Patchway Community College has to offer right from Yr7 to Yr13. The show was well supported by current students, past students, parents and members of the community and thanks to that support, they raised an amazing £450 for Comic Relief. This is a school record for raising money on a one-off event. Everyone enjoyed the show, and ultimately the judges chose Jamie Reed, George Coghlan and Josh Keiller as the champions.

Patchway Teacher, Neil Jenkins said “It was a massive congratulations to all involved, well done to you all.”

Shock and Sadness at Loss of 2 Precious Lives in House Fire

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and friends of the 2 young boys from Merryweather Close, Bradley Stoke, who sadly perished in a terrible house fire at around 6am on Saturday morning.

Avon and Somerset Police issued a statement saying that “Two adults and three children escaped from the property but tragically two young children have died. A full investigation has been launched by police and fire investigators.”

The community of Bradley Stoke is shocked and saddened by the tragic events. Local Vicar, Tom Webber of Christ The King Church, said “ Like everybody else we’re in state of shock. Over next few days we will be looking to support them. Our prayers will be with them.”

For news of the ongoing investigation see BBC News.

Bristol Aztec Rotary In The Swim

Monday, March 14th, 2011

On Saturday 5th March just before 7pm, several groups of people gathered at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.  They were experiencing various degrees of apprehension, nervousness or suppressed excitement for they were all entered into the Bristol Aztec Rotary annual swimathon.  The aim of the swimathon was for a team to swim as many lengths of the pool as possible in hour.  Each individual had tried hard to raise as much sponsorship as possible and each team’s proceeds were to be split between the Rotary Club and a charity of the team’s own choosing.

The swimming took place in two, two hour sessions, timed, monitored and recorded by Rotary Club members.  Eight teams took part with promising names such as, “City Sinkers,” “Flippers,” and “Ginny’s Bad Girls.”  Other team’s names either reflected the purpose of the effort such as, “Novi Survat,” a charity dedicated to relieving the effect of extreme poverty among the poor of Goa or the names in some instances mentioning the team’s origin, for example Thornbury Air Cadets, Baileys Birds (Baileys Court School) or Bradley Stoke Small Business Forum.

Every team swam really well and clocked up plenty of lengths for charity.  Ginny’s Bad Girls turned out to be not so bad after all with the highest total of 134 lengths to their credit.  All in all the evening was great fun and enjoyed by everyone; and once all the money is in and counted we hope that Bristol Aztec Rotary will have raised a substantial contribution to go towards the new MS Centre to be built in Bradley Stoke.

Outstanding Local Women Recognised at International Women’s Day

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

In honour of the Global Centenary of International Women’s Day (1911-2011) Southern Brooks organised a colourful fun-filled event on Tuesday night at Bradley Stoke Community School. A wine and canapé reception included viewing the nominations for the three categories of Outstanding Women’s Awards, as well as submissions to the Visual Arts Gallery.  There were other local information stalls to browse while music was played by the school’s Samba band.

A fabulous fashion show based upon British Historical Fashion highlighted the dress of famous women from Jane Austen and Emily Panchurst to Mary Quant. These historical icons were represented by some of the girls from local singing group Raise Your Voice, who later in the show sang two songs highlighting the beauty of ALL women.

Demonstrations of African head wrapping and a Sari wrap proved very popular with the audience.

The main fashion show was launched, highlighting flamboyant and multi-coloured Indian, African and East Asian styles.  The audience and all the local ladies and young girls drawn in from the community to model for the show had a great time.

Nominations for Outstanding Women’s Award:

Personal Achievement Award: Wendy Shore, Mary Abrahams and Carly Trimby.  Young Woman’s Award: Georgina Evans, Emily Slocombe and Brenda Hook.  Community Award: Kandis Ip, Rene Thorne, Fran Read, Sylvia Leavy, Sharon Osborn, Rebecca Strong, Ruth Smale, Veronica Obee, Janine Smith,  Pauline Underwood, Margaret Davies, Stephanie Gill, Pat Hutton, Amenia Koosaar and Elspeth Desmond.

The Winners Are:

Personal Achievement: Mary Abrahams – Mary is the mother of BSCS student Ryan Abrahams who sadly passed away last year. Mary also lost her father at around the same time. Mary was nominated for her courage and bravery over the past 12 months and for somehow maintaining her cheerfulness, despite her dreadful losses. She has since commenced work at BSCS alongside friends of her son and has been working hard at fundraising for both the Children’s Hospital South West and the Jessie May Trust. Mary won the prize donated by the Aztec Hotel of dinner, bed and breakfast at the hotel.

Young Woman: Brenda Hook – Brenda has not allowed the fact that she has a number of serious medical conditions deter her from seeking out the positive things in life. She has contributed much back into the community through her voluntary work with Beavers and through five years of committed training with St John’s Ambulance, which recently earned her the very prestigious “Grand Prior Award”. Brenda won £100 of gift vouchers for the Mall, donated by Bradley Stoke Matters.

Community: Sylvia Leavy – at 81 years young Sylvia is evidence indeed that keeping busy keeps you young!  Despite her own advancing years Sylvia is involved in many community projects to help the elderly, including Patchway Day Centre, Langdale Sheltered Housing, the Friday Club and Merlin Housing Community Action Group. She is a true servant, setting tables, serving meals, making drinks, tidying up, doing the shopping, she even organised a seated excercise class! She constantly organises lifts and shared taxis for others to attend various groups and clubs, and individuals often call her rather than the taxi company to organise a ride. Not a day goes by without someone ringing her to do something for them. Sylvia also has a full social life herself – is out every day and at least 3 evenings a week.  Sylvia’s prize is a weekend bed and breakfast for 4 people donated by the Ramada Grange Hotel in Winterbourne.

Do look out for the opportunity to vote for the special women in your life in next year’s awards.

Following the awards was a fantastic performance by BSCS Year 10 drama student Courtney, who acted as Anne Frank in a thought-provoking monologue entitled “Dreams of Anne Frank”.

The evening was concluded with a brief presentation from Michelle and Helen from The Friends of Jubilee Green. Michelle and Helen highlighted the projects for which fundraising is being targeted and the ways the park will be improved. They also shared their plans for some of the events that will take place at the park over the forthcoming months (check out our community pages for more information), and emphasised the need for more volunteers to come forward and join in the fun!

Claire Emery, Chair of Governors at BSCS said “These awards encapsulate what community spirit is all about”.

Community ‘Street Party’ For Royal Wedding

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Bradley Stoke Town Council are working with The Friends of Jubilee Green to hold a fabulous community ‘Street Party’ on April 29th in celebration of the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The grand event, which will take place at Jubilee Green in Bradley Stoke between 10am and 3pm, will feature: a huge screen for residents to watch the ceremony; childrens’ entertainment; community and commercial stalls; a ‘wedding reception’ disco; a prince and princess fancy dress competition, refreshments and a beer tent.

BBC Weatherman Ian Fergusson will officially open the event at 10.30pm. Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre has donated free family swim passes for the lucky winners of the fancy dress competition.

Michelle Dent, Chair of the Friends of Jubilee Green told us “FOJG is a charity entirely made up of local volunteers, and our very simple aim for this event is to bring the community together to have fun.  Two members are working very hard to plan this event and to co-ordinate a variety of community groups’ involvement in the party.

“We will be charging commercial stalls to attend the family event and re-investing funds raised into providing free family entertainment to ensure no member of the community is excluded in these financially challenging times.  We will also be taking the opportunity to fully utilise the huge TV by showing short films and presentations about local community groups.

“We want the community to have a really good time and enjoy each others’ company.”

‘Trashion’ Show In Aid of Children’s Hospice

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Pupils at Badminton Junior School in Westbury-on-Trym were raising money for The Children’s Hospice South West by holding a fashion show on Friday 4th March 2011, based on a recycling theme.

Girls, aged 3 to 11 years, had been designing costumes using a variety of recycled materials including plastic bags, newspaper, bottle tops, old clothes and packaging. Influences for their designs ranged from Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to fairytale princesses and model, Kate Moss!

The ‘Trashion Show’, as it has been named, was compered by Heart FM presenter, Paulina Gillespie from the Bush, Troy and Paulina Morning Show and attracted over 250 people.

All the music and laser lighting was kindly donated by Steve Burley of The Disco Company, Bristol Central Pronto print donated the printing costs for tickets and posters and Waitrose gave a magnum of champagne as a the main raffle prize. Many of the parents at the school made canapés to help make the evening go with a swing.

The Children’s Hospice South West also took an assembly at Badminton Junior School to talk to the children about the charity and attended on the night at the event.

Said Head of the Junior School, Emma Davies: “The Trashion Show has been a very exciting event that has helped raise much needed funds and awareness of the wonderful work of the Children’s Hospice – one of Bristol’s major, local charities. The girls and their parents really went to town on making some fantastic costumes and the creativity has been astounding. We have a very strong community here at Badminton and our parents are really supportive of the school and have gone out of their way to help organise the show and make it a memorable occasion.”
