BSCS Hosts Guinness World Record Attempt this Weekend

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

A Bristol-based hockey club needs volunteers to help them earn a place in history – and help save the lives of premature and critically ill babies.  South Gloucestershire Hockey Club’s (SGHC) goal is to set a new Guinness World Record™ for the longest hockey match in history; the current record is 30hrs 15mins.  They are doing it to raise funds for the Cots for Tots Appeal, a £1m drive to provide vital equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the city’s St Michael’s Hospital.

The marathon match takes place this coming weekend, May 28 and 29 at Bradley Stoke Community School. Cllr Ben Walker, Bradley Stoke Town Mayor will be blowing the whistle to start the match at 9am on Saturday May 28 and they are aiming to continue play until 4pm on Sunday 29 May.

So far the club has raised more than £1,900.  Organiser Darren Bane, an SGHC player and the father of a boy who was born more than three months early and spent the first six months at St Michael’s, said some more help was desperately needed to help make the event a success.

He said: “There is no doubt that the game is going to happen, and that we will be giving around £2,000 at least to Cots for Tots.  But if we are to get our reward for our effort, namely a place in the record books, we need some help.  We still need some independent witnesses to be there and log key times and events, as part of an evidence package we need to put together for Guinness in support of our world record claim.  We would also love to borrow some kind of large timer to have at the side of the pitch, which is capable of going up to 31 hours.  If there are any local athletic clubs or other sports clubs who could help, we’d be extremely grateful - you’ll be helping us to make history but, more importantly, supporting a charity which is saving lives.”

If you can offer any help over the weekend, please contact Darren Bane on 07787 511733 – mobile, or 01275 816155 – work, or email him: darren.bane@btinternet.com

Bradley Stoke Library Hosts BBC 80′s Day

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

History was brought to life today at Bradley Stoke library, where several members of BBC Bristol Radio team spent their time talking to locals about the 1980′s, and how the town of Bradley Stoke has developed as a community since the first houses were built around 25 years ago. The event was part of the BBC’s Domesday Project.

Hands-on displays included a plethora of toys, books, comics and even clothes from the 1980′s, along with some of the most popular computer games from that era. ‘Worm’ and ‘Space invaders’ were particularly popular with youngsters (and the not so young!) at today’s event, even though they are a far cry from today’s animated computer games.

The library staff joined in the sense of fun, by dressing in 80′s costumes, and some even joined the BBC Bristol Radio team in having 80′s style make-up applied by the make-up team who were brought in specially for this event.

Newspaper reports, documenting the development of the town’s many facilities – one by one – were put on display. Visitors to the library were able to read about much of Bradley Stoke’s history, from the initial opposition from Patchway residents against the proposed housing development through to announcements about the town’s first pub, schools, portacabin library, the leisure centre opening and schools. A fascinating 30-minute Bradley Stoke documentary from the 1980′s, produced by Chris Vacher, was shown – along with information about the very first ‘Residents’ Association’. It was interesting to hear that their number one priority was that of Communication – leading to the town’s very first Newsletter.

We would love to hear from any members of the original Residents’ Association – if you were involved please do get in touch with us!

Local author, Martin Davis, gave a fascinating insight into live in this area before the building work started. His book, The Farmer and the Golden Goose, was featured in the Bradley Stoke and Little Stoke Gifford Matters Magazines when it was first published – and Martin is delighted to report that following great local interest the first edition has nearly sold out!

Local weatherman, Ian Fergusson, put in a personal appearance, and was interviewed live on BBC Radio Bristol. BBC’s Dr Phil Hammond interviewed your Bradley Stoke Matters editors, Jaci and Alison, live and was particularly interested to hear how the magazine and community website has enhanced the sense of community spirit.

You can see more pictures from the day on our flickr tab.

Help Jim Raise Funds for Parkinson’s Disease – This Sunday 15th May

Friday, May 20th, 2011

An ex-committee member of Little Stoke Sports & Social Club, Mr Jim Brooks, is holding a charity fund raiser day on Sunday 15th May in aid of Parkinson’s disease. The Club is supporting his efforts and providing the Club premises for this event.

Jim aims to get as many sponsors as possible by doing a sports marathon consisting of pool, darts & skittles, there will also be refreshments on sale and a BBQ.

This is a charity close to Jim’s heart as he has suffered with this disease for quite some time now but remains very buoyant and as active as possible. We are told he was an irreplaceable member of the LSSC Committee for several years and also the Club ‘handyman’ where he turned his many talents to great use.

Do go along and support Jim and give him your encouragement, have a drink and a hotdog any time between 12-3pm on Sunday. It would really be appreciated!

Are you a local Carer, or do you know someone who is?

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Carers come in all shapes, sizes and ages! Some of them may not even recognise themselves as being carers, just doing what comes naturally to them and looking after their family members.  Maybe you know of someone who may benefit from some support?

Southern Brooks Community Partnership have been commissioned from South Gloucestershire Council to reach out to the Patchway, Bradley Stoke, Filton and the Stokes, to bring together carers to share experiences, discuss barriers and learn more about the support available, that may be they are not receiving.

A Carer’s network meeting is being held on Wednesday 1st June at Coniston Community Centre, Patchway, BS34 5LP, 2-4pm

This informal meeting is free, but booking is essential. Transport can be arranged. Please contact admin@sbcommunitypartenrship.org.uk or Jackie on 01454 868570.

BBC Points West’s Chris Vacher Visits Bradley Stoke Matters

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

The tables were turned on Jaci and Alison at Bradley Stoke & Little Stoke Gifford Matters this week, when instead of being the interviewers / reporters for all your local community news, they became Chris Vacher’s interviewees.

Chris and his team, Mattt and Philip, spent part of the morning on Friday 13th May at the very popular Christ The King coffee morning, and some time at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre and at the Willow Brook Centre. Matt said “The ladies at the coffee morning were really pleased to see Chris – they all wanted him to sit next to them!”

The BBC Points West team spent the afternoon in Ottrells Mead, at Bradley Stoke Matters ‘HQ’ where they were keen to hear all about the Matters Magazines and the Bradley Stoke Matters community website. Chris said “I spoke to the founders of the original Residents Association Newsletter nearly 25 years ago and I can see that your magazine and community website are the modern equivalent.”

Jaci and Alison were pleased to tell the BBC team what a great community we have here, thanks to the efforts of so many dedicated organisations, voluntary groups and individuals all working hard to strengthen community spirit.

The BBC Points West on Bradley Stoke, looking at how the community has developed over the last 25 years, is due to be aired on BBC1 on Monday 16th May at 6.30pm.

Free 80′s Day At Bradley Stoke Library

Friday, May 13th, 2011

The 1980s are being remembered with a free, day long celebration of the decade which brought us legwarmers, Live Aid, the Rubik’s Cube, Adam Ant and E.T.

Bradley Stoke Library is the venue for the BBC’s “Back to the ‘80s” event on Saturday 21st May between 9am and 4pm. Highlights include films from the BBC Bristol archives, ‘80s Punk and New Romantics make-up, a news and music quiz, history displays, books and newspaper cuttings, BBC Sound Archive recordings as well as discussion about the origins of this once rural part of South Gloucestershire.

There will be a guest appearance from BBC Points West weatherman, Ian Fergusson between 9.45am and 11.45am. Meanwhile BBC Radio Bristol will be broadcasting live from the event throughout the day.

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for communities for South Gloucestershire Council says; “This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to discover the roots of Bradley Stoke. The area is unrecognisable from the farmland and fields which stood here just a quarter of a century ago”.

In 1986 the area now known as Bradley Stoke was included in an ambitious BBC survey to record an electronic snapshot of everyday life across the UK for future generations. Nationwide a million volunteers took part in the Domesday Project. Now, 25 years later, everyone can explore the archive online, see the pictures, update the information and make their own mark on this fascinating record of our history.

Trish Campbell from BBC Learning says; “We’re inviting everyone to come along to experience the way we lived in the 1980s and help us update the pictures and information. We’d love people to bring their photos and stories of modern day Bradley Stoke so that we can trace the changes over the last two and a half decades”.

Local Couple are on a mission

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Two members from Holy Trinity Church, Steve and Portia Greenhalgh are embarking on an initial two-year voluntary teaching mission at Faith Academy Manila, Philippines and are looking for support. They have been a part of Holy Trinity Church for nearly eight consecutive years, selflessly serving in different capacities. Steven is involved in the IT/multimedia presentation ministry whilst Portia utilises her skills on the praise and music team. They have also jointly taken on the role of Church Treasurer.

Portia is a qualified teacher and childcare practitioner and Steven recently completed a TESOL course (Teaching English To Speakers Of Overseas Languages). They have been accepted at Faith Academy, Manila Philippines where Portia will be teaching at pre-school level and Steven will be assisting with English Language Learning (ELL). They will also be involved in mission outside Faith Academy with street children and the underprivileged of Manila.

As the positions are non-salaried the couple are in the process of raising start-up costs of £8,000 and monthly living expenses of approximately £1,700.

Faith Academy caters for children, from pre-school to high-school, whose parents are serving as missionaries all over Asia on medical missions, pastor training, Bible translation, church planting, ministry to the poor and tribal missions. There are over 700 children at the school and more than 120 staff. Twenty different nationalities are represented.

Jean Higgins, a fellow member at Holy Trinity and one of the couple’s support team comments “Steven and Portia have served their church, Holy Trinity in Bradley Stoke, with steadfast loyalty and commitment for many years, and I have no doubt that Faith Academy in Manila will be truly blessed by the same total, sacrificial, dedication.”

Steve and Portia told us, “We want to be seen as ambassadors for Bradley Stoke-reaching out to those less-fortunate than ourselves, giving them a hope and a future.”  Obviously, the more support they are able to raise between now and when they leave, the more effective they will be and the more people they will be able to reach out to.

If you feel able to offer support to Steven and Portia there are a number of ways to help:

Volunteers are also needed to help with upcoming activities, please email Portia or Steve with your details if you are willing to help, or for more information.

“We really want to thank everyone for the support so far,” added Portia and Steve. “Please consider helping us, so that we in turn can help others.”

“ The Downs play a very special role in the cultural and environmental life of the city. And over the years, The Downs have become a place for people to get together and have fun. It could be a football match, people out walking the dog, children flying a kite or fun runners raising hundreds of pounds for charity.

The celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Downs are a chance for us all to say ‘thank you’ to those who have looked after – and continue to look after – The Downs and ensure The Downs remain a green jewel in the city’s crown.”

Springtime Cygnets at the Nature Reserve

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Whilst April brought much to celebrate for the local residents of Bradley Stoke, long weekends, a royal wedding and lots of sunshine; our residents of the feathered variety were celebrating for different reasons as the swans at the town’s nature reserve welcomed five fluffy cygnets into the world.  The accompanying picture is believed to have been taken a matter of hours after the last of the five cygnets hatched and shows the happy family basking in the springtime sun.

Unfortunately, like all long weekends end and sun turns to rain, so has the celebration been soured for the family of swans.  The five cygnets are now down to just two with local residents speculating that either the three unlucky cygnets were drowned in the weir or that one of the many urban foxes that inhabit the town had made them an Easter treat.  Let’s hope that the remaining young survive through summer and the Swan family continue to grace the pond for many years to come!

Write-up and photos submitted by local resident Steve Gibbard

Warning: Rogue Traders at Large

Monday, May 9th, 2011

South Gloucestershire Trading Standards would like to remind residents to be extra vigilant when dealing with unexpected visits from traders.  They have become aware of a new tactic being used to gain entry into people’s home – asking to check the insulation in the roof. Two recent instances indicate that whilst the resident is with the person checking the roof, another has then taken money from other rooms in the house.

A recent operation carried out by Trading Standards and the Police also found rogue trader activity was present right across South Gloucestershire.  The work involved was predominantly home and garden improvements, patios and paving.  Officers became aware of instances where residents were pressured into agreeing to work being carried out, where contract paperwork was backdated to deprive residents of their legal right to cancel, and adding VAT to a figure already agreed where the resident wanted to pay by cheque.

If you think you have fallen victim to such activities, or would like further advice, please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

Car Cleaning for cash!

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Youngsters often get a bad press these days, but the 60 students of the Northavon School of Drama, who perform as the Northavon Youth Theatre Company, are out to prove they are the exception to the rule!

With the applause for their recent production of the Madness Musical ~ OUR HOUSE ~ still ringing in their ears, the students are putting away their trilbies and offering to wash your car on Sunday 5 June, at Thornbury Fire Station on Gloucester Road, between 10.00am and 2.00pm.

The productions cost around £16,000.00 to put on and even if every seat at the Armstrong Hall was sold, that wouldn’t equate financially, so to balance the books, a number of fundraising challenges have been met. After working hard with a stall at Thornbury Christmas Lights Switch-On, the youngsters decided to form their own band, rehearsed diligently for several months and put on a special Gig entitled A Night of Classics, featuring the music of Madness and other SKA music, which was hailed as a great success. 24 of them took part in hours of bag packing at Morrison’s in Cribbs Causeway and all this hard work raised a total of £1,300.00! In between all this, 4 teams also raised nearly £600.00 for the chosen charities by swimming in Thornbury Rotary Club Swimarathon.

Although the show is over, it’s never too soon to start raising funds for the next one, so this latest venture deserves your support and who wouldn’t like a nice clean car for the Summer! So if you are in and around Thornbury on 5th June do take your car along for a wash!
