Thursday, July 26th, 2012

With thanks to the Bradley Stoke Town Council, the Friends of Jubilee Green and Stokes Cycling Club were able to host a completely FREE Community Sports Day, at the Jubilee Centre last weekend.

The afternoon consisted of many activities, including an assault course, a bike assault course, tug of war, a slow bike race, a sack race and an ‘on your bike’ egg and spoon race! Children of all ages (and some parents) joined in the activities, with prizes given to the winners which were donated by Bike Fix Bradley Stoke and Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

Inside the Jubilee Centre you could make your own medals, sea creatures and rosettes and enjoy a FREE tuck shop provided by Holy Trinity Church.

The children especially enjoyed the option to ‘bling’ their bike, which they were able to show off at the end of the day with a bike parade.

BSCS Outdoor Classroom Wins Wessex Water Award

Friday, July 13th, 2012

We are pleased to be invited along to Bradley Stoke Community School on Friday 13th July to take part in an award ceremony in recognition of their Courtyard Classroom project.

Paul Graham from Wessex Water presented the school with a cheque for £400 from ‘Wessex Watermark’ in recognition of the school’s commitment to increasing its outdoor learning opportunities by turning an underused inner courtyard into an outdoor classroom.

Plans for the garden include an allotment area plus plantings of native trees and shrubs.  A wildlife and marsh area will encourage the introduction of wild life to the area. The Courtyard Classroom Gardenwill eventually be partly irrigated by a water recycling project from the science department’s grey water research project. The pond will have an underwater camera to film the comings and goings of its pond life. The whole project, led by the three science technicians, will be overseen by pupils from the science department who will be monitoring the garden’s weather station, and keeping records from the pond and bird box web cameras.

“The Courtyard Classroom offers so many opportunities to link science with wildlife” said Peter Stafford the school’s Science Technician. “Nothing we teach about ecology and science could possibly be as riveting as watching the transformation that this courtyard garden will make to our immediate environment. Our pupils will witness the colonisation by plants, trees, birds and insects and their observations will be used by the science department to link straight back into their curriculum. We are delighted with the support that Wessex Water has given us through this Award.

The Watermark Award provides funds for environmental projects within the Wessex Water area.  Now in its nineteenth year, it has supported over 800 environmental initiatives. Organised by The Conservation Foundation, all projects are judged by a panel chaired by its President – David Bellamy.

Year 8 Pupil, Chris Tasker, told us: “I really enjoy going to the Courtyard Club every Wednesday. I’ve learnt how to grow potatoes and vegetables and am growing them at home now. I enjoy digging – I helped to dig out the pond and the allotment. Mr Stanford showed us how to sow grass seed. He even taught us the meaning of the word ‘weed’ – it’s not the plant that makes it a weed, its whether the plant is wanted in a particular place. So one plant in a garden could be described as a weed, but the same plant at the edge of the pond is not a weed.”

Gold Award for Friends of Holy Trinity

Friday, July 13th, 2012

Children at Holy Trinity Primary School are used to seeing a variety of ‘well done’ awards at their Friday assembly. Usually for things like good behaviour in class, neat handwriting or particularly hard work.

This week, in addition to the usual awards, it was a group of dedicated parents who got the recognition that they deserve. The ‘Friends of Holy Trinity’ were awarded a trophy and a cheque for £500 for reaching the regional finals of the PTA Gold Star Award – beating hundreds of entries from the whole of the South of England. The Gold Star Award is an annual award, presented for changing the life of a school.

Maddie Jarrett from PTA UK told us “The Friends of Holy Trinity were nominated by Friends member Mandy Sinclair and the judges were really impressed by the hard work put in by The Friends to achieve something really special in the school, namely the new library and ITC suite. The Friends really did make a difference.”

An individual award for dedication was also given to The Chair of the Friends, Lou Day; she received a luxury Thorntons Hamper which looked absolutely delicious!

Lou said that the group plan to use the unexpected prize towards improvements to the school’s outdoor play equipment.

Well done to ALL of The Friends.

Local Mumpreneur Launches ‘Handy Mandy’

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

Bradley Stoke mum-of-two, Mandy Sinclair, is used to doing all manner of household jobs that other people don’t like – from decorating, to cleaning, ironing and jobs in the garden. She has always enjoyed helping friends and family and her abilities were appreciated so much by those around her that she decided to set up her own business offering a range of household and garden services to the local community, for a fair and reasonable charge.
One happy customer, Di Griffiths from Little Stoke told us “I’ve known Mandy since she was at Stoke Lodge Junior School. She is extremely reliable, very hard working and trustworthy. She has jetwashed my driveway to restore it to its original condition, painted my fence and garage door and now she cleans my house in my absence every fortnight.” ‘Handy Mandy’ is even happy to clean your oven to almost good-as-new, clean and organise your cupboards, as well as offering a regular or one-off house cleaning service.
Mandy says “Whatever job it is that you hate, just give me a call and I will be happy to give you a free quote. My aim is to free up your valuable time.” Trustworthy & reliable, Mandy is a former Registered Child Minder, with a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check for peace of mind. References are available upon request. She can be contacted on 07769 150 816.
