Filton Air Cadets Win National Drill Competition

Monday, November 19th, 2012

Cadets and Staff from Filton are celebrating after their Drill team were crowned National Drill Champions at RAF Halton for the first time in its history.

The group of teenagers from 2152 (North Bristol) Squadron beat off stiff competition from the best squadrons across the UK to take the top spot by achieving a standard very few squadrons reach.

During the National competition on Saturday 17th November, they were marked by professional Drill Instructors from the Recruit Training Squadron at RAF Halton. The cadets were not only assessed on their standard of drill as a team, but also on their individual bearing and standard of dress.

The team, who qualified for the National Drill Championship in October following their victory at the South West Region competition, having been in training since August and this is only the second time in its history that cadets from the squadron have competed in the National competition. It is also a first for Bristol & Gloucestershire Wing, who have never previously had a squadron take the top title.

Flight Lieutenant Jim Brimble, Officer Commanding said: “The cadets have been working hard as for weeks, putting in extra time to make sure that both their uniform and standard of drill were at the very highest. I was present at RAF Halton to watch them compete and I am immensely proud of their achievement – a sentiment that I am sure is shared by all the staff and the other cadets.”

In addition to the team being placed first overall, Cadet Warrant Officer Jenny Simmons took top prize as the best Drill NCO, beating the competition from the 6 other teams.

Based at Pine Grove in Filton, the squadron caters for approximately 100 young people aged between 13 and 20, by providing a wide variety of activities. If you are aged 13-17, or an adult volunteer interested in joining the air cadet organisation you can visit www.raf.mod.uk/aircadets to find out more.

A Commonwealth Gold and Silver medal for Bradley Stoke

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

On Tuesday the 24th of January 2012 two Bradley Stoke judo club players won the top two medals in their categories at the prestigious 2012 ‘Commonwealth Judo Championship’ which this year was hosted by Wales at the millennium centre in Cardiff. The players Steph Walker and Lele Nairne (both just 14 years of age) won first the silver medal and then Lele bagged the gold and tile of Commonwealth judo champion.

Commenting on their performance club coach, Pete Douglas said: “The selection process for this championship started months ago when the best players England had to offer, gathered to fight-it-out to distinguish the top athletes to represent England in this truly International event. These two players proved themselves to be true titans in judo and right at the very top of their game. They are a credit to the club and South West and I know will shortly be going on to represent England again at other internationals at the very highest level”.

Lele and Steph are both members of the elite England judo squad and Bradley Stoke judo club now has more ETD (England Talent Development) judo squad members than any other club in the country! Later this year the club will be taking ALL of their players to Venray in Holland to compete in HIGH LEVEL competition and in 2013 will be taking all of their top players to compete in the US open so we can all look forward to more medals!

What a fantastic result – Well Done to Lele and Steph and to Bradley Stoke Judo Club!

Youngsters travel back in time with Dr Who themed holiday club

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Local children aged between 5 and 11 were thrilled today, at the start of the annual ‘Champions’ holiday club run by volunteers from Bradley Stoke Evangelical Church.

This year’s theme is ‘Dr Who’ and dedicated church members have spent many hours preparing amazing props for the 3-day event. A realistic-looking tardis is the focal point, along with a larger-than-life cyber man, dalek and many other space-age decorations. Children (and adults) were especially impressed that the tardis did indeed open out into a much larger room!

Church members are delighted that this year’s holiday club is fully booked – reflecting on the popularity of last year’s event. Between today and Friday youngsters will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of games, quizzes, songs, craft, drama and bible stories. It gives parents a much-needed break during the Summer holiday and enables children to have great fun whilst making new friends.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who are giving up their time to make this holiday club so special.

BSEC also co-ordinates ’4 MEN’, which is a group running events just for men. Football sessions take place on Wednesdays from 9-10 pm at Bradley Stoke Community School’s Astro Turf and all men aged 16 and over are welcome. Call Tim on 07515 930363 or Dave on 07968 852839 for full details.

BSEC’s popular Busy Bees parent and toddler group recommences after the summer break on Tuesday 7th September.
