Charity Music Concert Raises £337 for Children in Need

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

A Charity Music Concert was held at the Bristol Civil Service Sports Club in Horfield on 16th November which was attended by 102 people and raised £337 for Children In Need.

FAB 208 provided excellent music for the evening and thanks goes to the lead band member Mr John Hughes and co for an unforgettable night of classic 70’s hits.

People arrived for the music concert at the club following last year’s successful event which raised funds for Ronald McDonald House in Bristol.  Cllr Brian Mead of Filton opened the night to FAB 208 and coordinated the evening along side, Mr Glen Wintle.

A charity raffle took place mid-way through the evening which was well supported and supplied with 40 prizes from businesses and members of the Civil Service club.  There was also an extra added surprise when the club’s very own Dusty Bear made a guest appearance due to Pudsey being called to the BBC!  Dusty Bear handed all the prizes out to the winners and even received a few cuddles along the way.

Businesses which donated prizes for the charity raffle included: the FAB 208 band / The Civil Service Club, Giacomo Licata Barber, Terry’s Barber Shop, Jolly Fryer Fish & Chip Shop, Charcoal Grill, Akash, India Restaurant, Real Brazil Restaurant all on Filton Avenue, Antonios Barber on Gloucester Road, Watershed Cinema and the Fleet Air Arm Museum – RNAS Yeovilton. Bristol Ticket Shop provided the tickets at discount price for selling. Bristol Rovers FC advertised the event in their match day programme.

Bradley Stoke & Little Stoke Gifford Matters placed the event in their magazines and on the website.  Filton Matters, Filton Voice and The Filton Journal also advertised on their Websites.

Everyday Occasions, The Party Shop on Filton Avenue provided free raffle books and free delivery of yellow balloons for the evening.

A big thanks goes to all the volunteers who helped with the arrangements for the event and on the night to make it special for all involved.

Charity Football Match Raises £1,400 for Childline

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Bradley Stoke Town Football Club is delighted to announce that last weekend’s charity match, which saw the Club field 16 squad players from all teams to face a celebrity and ex pro ‘Mayor’s XI’, ended with £1,400 collected and donated to Heart’s ‘Have A Heart’ Campaign in association with Childline.

BSTFC spokesman Rich Sears said,

“There are so many thank you’s, it is impossible to list but a big thank you to Ben Walker, Heart, all at Bradley Stoke Town Council, the players and of course the public who donated their time and money to this great event”.

“We had over 240 spectators and the club itself, showed how improved they have been recently by only losing 3-2. But in the end, the charity was the winner and we were delighted to have been part of it”.

“We are hoping to plan another event of this kind next year, in which we hope the people of Bradley Stoke can once again show their fantastic support, as they did so well on this occasion”.

Well done to everyone for a fun afternoon of football on such a very hot day!  The Bar BQ and ice creams went down well.  The raffle was called by Troy from Heart in the Clubhouse after the match with prizes ranging from a signed Bristol Rovers shirt, to Bristol City tickets, wine, chocolates and a gift voucher for Pets at Home.  We look forward to next year’s event!

Sponsored Buggy Push for Bliss 23rd June

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

We were pleased to hear from local resident Kerry Robinson who is organising a charity event for baby charity Bliss.  Bliss plan to hold a Sponsored Buggy Push in various locations across the country and Kerry is keen to make the Bradley Stoke event as big as possible!

Bliss works to provide the best possible care and support for all premature and sick babies and their families.  One in every 9 babies in the UK is born either premature or sick – which is  over 80,000 babies every year, with one being admitted to special care every six minutes! The vital care that babies receive after birth can have a profound impact on the rest of their lives. For families struggling to cope, it is one of the most difficult, emotional and stressful times of their lives.  Bliss provides advice and support over the phone, through their messageboard and network of local councillors and locally-based groups.

This is a charity close to Kerry’s own heart as her own daughter was born premature.  Kerry shares her story with us:

“Amber was born on June 27th 2011, 6 weeks early.  Due to my waters leaking at 32 weeks, I was given steroids to mature her lungs as doctors thought she could come at anytime.  Luckily she didn’t and I was induced at 34 weeks to reduce the risk of infection.

“Amber weighed 5lb 4oz and taken straight to nicu at southmead and put on cpap to help with her breathing, and under ultra violet lights as she was badly jaundiced. Amber came home a few weeks later and has done really well,  She is now a very happy and healthy 10 month old.

“I never expected to be in the position of having a premature baby, especially as I had a full term son previously.  It was an emotional rollercoaster and everyday I feel so very lucky that Amber has done so well.  Its not until you are in the position of being in nicu that you realise how many people go through that hard time and that’s where Bliss is so important.”

Join Kerry and make the Stokes’ Buggy Push HUGE and help raise as much as possible for this worthy charity!  The event takes place at 10am on 23rd June from the Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre and is a 5km sponsored walk around the Three Brooks Nature Reserve.

To register, or for more information, please email kerryrobinson@hotmail.co.uk or search for the event on facebook – ‘bliss buggy push fundraiser bristol’, or visit the Bliss website www.bliss.org.uk/action/buggypush

Kath Wilkinson, Tutor, comments: “It was a great experience, the students all supported each other and enjoyed getting involved, most of all we had fun and our legs aren’t too sore today!”

Leisure Centre Staff Remember James Clifford with Spin-A-Thon

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre James CliffordStaff from the social enterprise trust that runs South Gloucestershire’s leisure centres are undertaking an all-day “spin-a-thon” to raise money for the British Heart Foundation in honour of a colleague who suddenly passed away in August.

Circadian Trust’s Head of Marketing James Clifford died on August 6, following a cardiac arrest, at the age of 37. Staff have chosen to remember James by raising money for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) through physical activity to help raise awareness of heart disease, treatments and tests.

Mark Crutchley, Chief Executive of Circadian Trust, said: “James was well loved and respected as a colleague, a professional and a friend by all at Circadian Trust. The spin-a-thon challenge is our way of remembering him as he was also a very keen sportsman. James played an instrumental role at the Trust and showed an enormous amount of dedication and commitment, continuously trying to improve our quality of service to the local community. Our thoughts are with his family and we hope that our event will also be a celebration of the energy James always showed in everything he did.”

The event will see staff cycling from 8am to 8pm on October 5 on stationary bikes at the leisure centres run by social enterprise, Circadian Trust, in Bradley Stoke, Yate, Thornbury and Kingswood.

Each leisure centre will have two bikes in reception for the challenge and funds raised will go to the British Heart Foundation.

Outside of work, James was married with one daughter and played an active role in his local community where he volunteered as scout leader at the Keynsham Scouts.

BSCS Hosts Charity Record Breaking Attempt

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Over the weekend of Saturday May 28 and Sunday May 29 Bradley Stoke Community School is the venue for a unique record-breaking attempt by South Gloucestershire Hockey Club (SGHC). The club, which plays its home matches at Golden Hill, hopes to set a new Guinness World Record™ for the longest hockey match in history.

The very special hockey game aims not only to earn a place in the record books but also to make as much money as possible for the local charity ‘Cots for Tots’ Appeal at Bristol’s St Michael’s Hospital.

The current hockey match record, set by Omagh Hockey Club in Ireland, in August 2010, is 30 hours and 15 minutes. SGHC plans to play for 31 hours.

SGHC chose to support ‘Cots for Tots’ after two members had direct experience of the specialist care provided by the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Michael’s, which looks after premature and critically-ill new-born babies. In October 2010, Club Secretary Craig Lewis became the father of Evan, who was born at 33 weeks and four days, weighing 4lb 15oz, and who needed to have a short stay at NICU. In May 2008, event organiser Darren Bane became father to Matthew, born at 26 weeks, weighing just 1lb 4oz (575g). Matthew spent the first six months of his life at NICU.

Darren said: “I’m quite sure that without the special equipment and expertise of the NICU staff Matthew would probably not be with us today.

“We will never be able to re-pay NICU fully for the gift they have given us, but at least we can try to give something back.”

Lauren Vincent, community fundraising manager for the Appeal, added: “The World Record attempt is a really unique challenge made even more special by Evan and Matthew’s stories. We are looking forward to joining the community in cheering on the players in May.”

Last September SGHC adopted Cots for Tots as its charity for the season, pledging to donate £1 for every goal each of its four league teams scores in their 2010/11 campaigns. This has raised £132. The club then decided to organise a ‘flagship’ event, to raise as much money as possible, and the world record attempt was born.

The ‘Cots for Tots’ Appeal aims to raise £1m to provide a new intensive care suite with four new life-saving cots at NICU and a family accommodation suite close by.

Darren said: “I am particularly grateful to Bradley Stoke Community School for pulling out all the stops to ensure we have a venue for our record attempt; we were in danger of falling at the first hurdle, but thanks to the support from the school, we are able to go ahead.

“We don’t have a specific fund raising target in mind, we just want to get as much money as we possibly can for this life-saving charity.”

More details can be found on the club’s own website, www.sghc.org.uk

Anyone who would like to sponsor the record bid can donate through the dedicated webpage at www.justgiving.com/sghc
