Easter Bonnet Parade at Holy Trinity School

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Dozens of parents and pupils from Holy Trinity Primary School braved the cold weather today, to take part in the school’s Annual Easter Bonnet walk to school.

Eager children met up with teachers at Aldi’s car park, compared their home-made bonnet creations, and enjoyed a fun and colourful walk to school via Primrose Bridge. There was a great atmosphere, and most of the children appeared to enjoy the early-morning exercise. Many children (and their parents and grand-parents no doubt) had put a huge amount of effort into their costumes.

The Friends of Holy Trinity Primary School have kindly bought chocolate Easter Eggs for pupils, and will be presenting them later today.

Aretians are the first Club locally to offer this provision and Matt (whose own daughter participates in ‘Rugby Cubs’) was particularly enthusiastic about the sessions, telling us “ ‘Rugby Cubs’ is first and foremost designed for fun, whilst gently encouraging Rugby specific skills such as running, catching, passing and kicking – Sunday mornings are definitely something for the youngsters to look forward to at Aretians!”

Baileys Court Primary Receive Second Green Flag Award

Friday, February 8th, 2013

We were delighted to receive a letter from the children at Bailey’s Court Primary School letting us know that the school has been awarded its second Green Flag of the Eco Schools Awards! The school achieved its first Green Flag in 2010 and has worked hard to continue and build upon the school’s green learning and developments. The school has a keen and dedicated Green Team which is made up of children from Year 1 to Year 6. The Green Team meets fortnightly to discuss ways to promote sustainability and to make the school as environmentally friendly as possible.  Projects are led by the children from conception to delivery.

Since the last Green Flag, was awarded the Green Team has supported big projects in the school including installing a wind turbine, helping with the new butterfly hide and garden and providing a new home for the school chickens. Smaller projects have involved encouraging staff and children to recycle more by providing a new staffroom recycling bin and recycling bags for the school kitchen/classroom.  Litter picks have helped to reduce litter in the school environment, as have the new pencil bins on playground which were bought with funds raised by the team.

As well as organising and leading projects, the Green Team has many ongoing tasks that they fulfil brilliantly.  Each week, ‘Eco-Spywork’ (where the team monitor how effectively each class is turning off lights etc), meter readings, fruit composting and data analysis takes place.

The school celebrated their new achievement by asking members of the Green Team to raise the new Green Flag on the flagpole situated in the playground on Wednesday 6th February (pictured).

Downing Street Recognition for Meadowbrook Bell Ringers

Monday, November 12th, 2012

The Meadowbrook Bell Ringers are delighted to have received a letter from 10 Downing
Street!

A group of Year 4 children from Meadowbrook Primary School meet every
Thursday lunchtime to practice ringing handbells. Emma M, Emma H,
Skyy, Katie and Hollie practised “happy birthday” on the handbells
and sent a recording on DVD to David Cameron for his birthday in October.
The Bell Ringers were thrilled to receive a very personal response from
Mr Cameron. In his letter, the Prime Minister thanks the Meadowbrook
Primary School’s Bell Ringing club for their kind thoughts on his recent
birthday. He mentions each child by name and comments on their talent and
enthusiasm. He goes on to say

"Bell ringing has an important part in the cultural history of our country;
indeed the ringing of bells across the United Kingdom was chosen as a
signal of the countdown to the opening ceremony of the London 2012
Olympic Games, and I am glad to see that we are encouraging a new generation
of bell ringers to carry on this tradition." He concludes by sending his best
wishes for the continued success of the Meadowbrook Bell Ringing Club.
The Meadowbrook Bell Ringers are now turning their attention to practising
Christmas carols in preparation for the Carol Service at the Willowbrook
Centre in December.

BSCS Students Inspired by Willie the Chocolate Man

Monday, October 8th, 2012

BSCS Students Captivated by Entrepreneur

The students of Bradley Stoke Community School were captivated by entrepreneur, Willie Harcourt-Coozes as he told the story of his life and his journey from dreams to business success. Year 12 Student, Courtney Preston, has sent us the following account to share with all our readers:

Willie spoke of his childhood spent on a farm on a small island off the South West coast ofIrelandand the hardships and joy they experienced living self -sufficiently. Willie was educated in England and Ireland, however after the death of his father and a nasty mugging at age 18 he found himself feeling “confused about the meaning of life”.

For several years after this he experimented with different jobs, but Willie failed to find his niche and so set off to travel acrossSouth America. This visit was the beginning of a love affair withVenezuelaand cacao which would eventually lead to his success.

Willie evoked the beauty of the cacao farm that would begin his chocolate manufacturing career, describing the farm as “like magic” and “one of the most amazing places in the world”.

To Willie’s delight, the owner of the farm invited him to stay for a while. It was then that Willie first began experimenting with cacao perfecting the art of making hot chocolate. He described that, although a small moment, it was in fact “a life changing moment”.

After the collapse of the Venezuelan economy Willie returned toEngland. He emphasised to students throughout setbacks you need to have the passion and resilience to hold on to your dreams.

Willie publicised his journey to be the first chocolatier in Britainto make chocolate from the bean on Channel 4 Willie’s wonky chocolate factory and Chocolate Revolution: Raising the Bar. The publicity combined with a massive amount of hardwork resulted in the Willie’s cacao taking off.

Everything from recruitment to managing VAT was sorted by Willie himself. The risks were massive on his behalf but this wasn’t going to stand in the way of his desires. He borrowed £10,000 from his mother and large amounts of money from the bank to send the business in the right direction and gain the publicity that his new business needed.

From there onwards Willie’s cacao market became increasingly big. He was soon travelling around the world distributing his products and doing talks. One of the students asked Willie about his international experiences in business, to which he spoke about the difficulties he experienced but highlighted the importance of looking for every opportunity and accepting that you won’t be successful every time. Amazed by the determination and resilience demonstrated by Willie, nearly every student found themselves thinking about what they could achieve.

When asked about his next steps, he revealed that the next big move would be a working chocolate factory open for visitors so that he could provide a unique, educational experience that will hopefully inspire people to understand more about real chocolate.

One A-Level business student, particularly inspired by Willie’s story, asked what advice he would give to somebody who wishes to one day be as successful, and received the answer “the best advice I could give is to dream big and then follow your dreams”.

After lots of intrigued students eagerly asking their questions, Willie ended by telling us that you need to “let your passion drive you” and gave each student delicious cacao products to try themselves.

There is more information about the products, the recipes and Willie himself on http://williescacao.com if you find yourself intrigued, inspired or just wish to see the products.

Stay & Play @ CtK for Children with Special Needs

Sunday, August 5th, 2012

We were delighted to be invited down to visit a new community group in Bradley Stoke this weekend.

Stay & Play is a safe environment for parents/carers to bring their children who have additional needs as well as their siblings. The idea was put together by parents who attend Christ the King and whose children have Special Needs.

From 1pm till 5pm every Saturday, in a very spacious environment, the children can enjoy playing with their friends and family, with plenty of multi sensory toys that suit all children with different disabilities. Parents/carers meet up, chat and share information whilst enjoying the free tea/coffee and cake.

Feedback from families is that the area is lacking this type of provision and they are fully supporting the project:

It’s a complete life saver! The place we used to go as a family isn’t as accessible to families as it used to be. Now, one day a week, we have somewhere to go. The children are happy to see familar faces of friends they’ve met before. Unlike most softplays there are no financial limitations, you just give what you can afford. A friend wanted to come along with her child but required a ‘mobile hoist’ so they are trying to get one! I was really impressed by how welcome we’ve been made to feel.’

‘I was chocked up with emotion when I found out we had somewhere we could go to as a family, to forfill what is no longer accessible to us at other softplays.’

Although parents/carers are responsible for their children at all times, occasionally there are volunteers who stay and help play with the children. A special mention must go to Greggs in Bradley Stoke who provided the cakes and whose Area Manager has also helped out as a volunteer.

Donations of cakes, money and help with tidying up is always appreciated!

Belarus Children at Folly Farm before Heading Home

Saturday, August 4th, 2012

A group of 18 children plus two leaders from Belarus were invited to Folly Farm at Stowey near Pensford by the Avon Wildlife Trust last Wednesday (1st August) for a day of bushcraft activity. The children, aged between 11 and 15, had been brought to Britain for a 4 week recuperative holiday by the Bristol link of the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line charity (more information at www.ccll.org.uk).

Belarus suffered the worst of the nuclear fallout from the Chernobyl power station disaster 26 years ago, and the effects are still being experienced today. The charity has been bringing children over annually for the last 16 years, for a once only visit at a time in their lives when they are growing rapidly and their bodies absorbing the environment around them. To give them 4 weeks of clean environment and food at this stage of their lives can prolong their lifespan by up to 2 years; indeed, a year after a visit, parents have  reported improvements to their children’s health.

The visit to Folly Farm began around a camp fire, and then the children were set a challenge to collect wood and light a fire themselves without matches, simply using a glowing King Alfred’s Cake fungus, which they had to blow on hard to get dry tinder to light! They then prepared vegetables and dough for a vegetable stew and bread twists all cooked on the main fire. After this they went to a different part of the woods, and formed three teams to build dens, which were then tested with them inside to see if they were watertight! There was much laughter and delight throughout the day, and the Avon Wildlife Trust leaders were thanked (in English) for doing a great job.

The photo shows the party full of fun and frolic despite a blustery and wet day.- as usual the  un- summery weather did not lessen the children’s enthusiasm!

In our latest edition of Little Stoke Gifford Matters we heard from local families in the Stokes who were helping to host the party of children from Belarus.  Additional host families are always sought.  If you are interested in finding out more please check out the website  www.ccll.org.uk or contact

BSCS Outdoor Classroom Wins Wessex Water Award

Friday, July 13th, 2012

We are pleased to be invited along to Bradley Stoke Community School on Friday 13th July to take part in an award ceremony in recognition of their Courtyard Classroom project.

Paul Graham from Wessex Water presented the school with a cheque for £400 from ‘Wessex Watermark’ in recognition of the school’s commitment to increasing its outdoor learning opportunities by turning an underused inner courtyard into an outdoor classroom.

Plans for the garden include an allotment area plus plantings of native trees and shrubs.  A wildlife and marsh area will encourage the introduction of wild life to the area. The Courtyard Classroom Gardenwill eventually be partly irrigated by a water recycling project from the science department’s grey water research project. The pond will have an underwater camera to film the comings and goings of its pond life. The whole project, led by the three science technicians, will be overseen by pupils from the science department who will be monitoring the garden’s weather station, and keeping records from the pond and bird box web cameras.

“The Courtyard Classroom offers so many opportunities to link science with wildlife” said Peter Stafford the school’s Science Technician. “Nothing we teach about ecology and science could possibly be as riveting as watching the transformation that this courtyard garden will make to our immediate environment. Our pupils will witness the colonisation by plants, trees, birds and insects and their observations will be used by the science department to link straight back into their curriculum. We are delighted with the support that Wessex Water has given us through this Award.

The Watermark Award provides funds for environmental projects within the Wessex Water area.  Now in its nineteenth year, it has supported over 800 environmental initiatives. Organised by The Conservation Foundation, all projects are judged by a panel chaired by its President – David Bellamy.

Year 8 Pupil, Chris Tasker, told us: “I really enjoy going to the Courtyard Club every Wednesday. I’ve learnt how to grow potatoes and vegetables and am growing them at home now. I enjoy digging – I helped to dig out the pond and the allotment. Mr Stanford showed us how to sow grass seed. He even taught us the meaning of the word ‘weed’ – it’s not the plant that makes it a weed, its whether the plant is wanted in a particular place. So one plant in a garden could be described as a weed, but the same plant at the edge of the pond is not a weed.”

Little Stoke Social Club Raises Over £2,000 for CLIC Sargent

Friday, May 18th, 2012

We were pleased to be invited to Little Stoke Social Club again to witness the handing over of the fruits of the last twelve month’s fundraising efforts.

Every year the Club nominates a charity to benefit from the members’ generosity at fund raising events held throughout the year.  CLIC Sargent was chosen for the 2011/12 year as, in addition to being such a worthwhile local charity, life time LSSC member Rosemary Barton works as the team administrator at the local CLIC offices at Abbey Wood Business Park in Filton.

Local Fundraising Manager Kiren Fernandes (pictured centre) was delighted to collect the cheque for £2,090.00 pounds from committee members Pat Louca, Rosemary Barton, Tim Hewer and Andy Barton.  Tim, Club Chairman, commented how pleased he was that the Club had managed to match the fundraising efforts of the previous year in the current economic climate and praised the generosity of the Club’s members in achieving such an amount.

As in previous years, the Club raised funds by holding fun events such as ‘Deal or No Deal’, Mr & Mrs, a Race Night, a Club Fun night, a Rock ‘n Roll Evening, Strongest Man event and holding raffles on the days big sporting events.  Father and son members Steve and Andy Barton grew moustaches for ‘Movember’ and when other charities use the Club for fundraisers, there is no charge for the facilities but a donation is suggested towards the Club’s charity pot.  Lots of money was raised this way from skittles nights, Little Stoke Beach Party, DAWG and Bradley Stoke Radio Group amongst others.

The nominated charity for 2012/13 is Parkinson’s UK as ex-committee member Jim Brooks is affected by the condition.

Abbeywood Community School Support Children In Need

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Students and Staff from Abbeywood Community School took part in a wide range of activities during Children In Need Day to raise money for the popular charity.

A huge Pudsey Bear was covered with coins and students worked really hard to fill him up.  A cake sale with delicious treats took place in the atrium during break and lunch time, 6th formers volunteered to do face painting in the atrium while the P.E department helped to organised a basketball game staff versus students.  A great day was had by all, and a fantastic combined effort resulted in over £460 being raised for the charity. Well done to everyone from us here at Bradley Stoke & Little Stoke Gifford Matters!

Bradley Stoke Road Safety Petition Goes Live

Monday, October 10th, 2011

A Road Safety Petition, set up by local parents following the recent accident on Bradley Stoke Way, has been formally submitted and is now live on the South Gloucestershire Council website.

The horrific accident on Friday 30th October, just after the end of the school day at Bradley Stoke Community School, left a Year 9 child seriously ill in hospital and a motorcyclist in hospital with a broken arm ad broken leg.

The pressure group are highlighting their concerns and proposals as follows:

“A Lack of adequate pedestrian crossings – presently there is a Toucan crossing between the leisure centre and The Willowbrook Centre. The 2 “drop kerb” crossings are located near Wheatfield Drive to Savages Wood and one further towards the leisure centre (which is the designated cycle crossing). The dual carriageway on the Willowbrook Centre side, encourages risky overtaking by motorists, before the road merges into a single lane carriageway.

“The completion of the building of our town facilities has led to greater numbers of pedestrians and vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents.

“The current speed limit of 40 mph in a residential area is too high.

Our proposals are as follows:

A raised toucan crossing (speed table) between the nature reserve and Wheatfield Drive, replacing both of the drop kerb crossings.
Dual carriageway to be changed to single lane traffic.
Reduce speed limit of Bradley Stoke Way to 30mph and implement appropriate physical measures to enforce this.
Improved signage along Bradley Stoke Way eg. caution/slow/children/schools, signs that light up if cars are speeding.”

To add your support to this petition please see BRADLEY STOKE WAY PETITION

Jubilee Green Consultation Goes Online

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

The Friends of Jubilee Green have launched an online public consultation to gain the public’s feedback on two of their projects: an ‘Art Enrichment’ Project for the Park and an ‘Enablement’ Project.

Local people are being asked to state their preferences on a variety of different ideas, all of which would enhance the Jubilee Green for the benefit of the community. Plans include an archaeological dig feature within the large sandpit, brass rubbing plates throughout the park, wooden sculptures, a community mosaic, provision of shade, development of the pond, a living willow fence and even a community garden.

The Friends, a small group of volunteers from Bradley Stoke, have already gained much positive feedback from people attending their ‘Summer of Fun’ events and they are now asking the wider community to have their say.

Please take a few minutes to express your opinions at the Friends of Jubilee Green Website
