‘Rugby Cubs’ at Aretians RFC

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

We were really interested to meet up with Matt Stedman recently, coach at Aretians RFC about the Club’s pioneering initiative to offer a multi-activity session for younger girls and boys aged 2-7 years. Aretians are the first Club locally to offer this provision and Matt (whose own daughter participates in ‘Rugby Cubs’) was particularly enthusiastic about the sessions, telling us “ ‘Rugby Cubs’ is first and foremost designed for fun, whilst gently encouraging Rugby specific skills such as running, catching, passing and kicking – Sunday mornings are definitely something for the youngsters to look forward to at Aretians!”

Members play games, receive coaching in basic skills and basically are encouraged to use as much energy as they can! The sessions are FREE for all children and supplied by Aretians RFC –  coaches are RFU Qualified, CRB Checked and Paediatric First Aiders to ensure it is a fun and safe environment.

In the winter months sessions are held at Patchway Sports Hall from 10.00am, with FREE food and drink provided to the children after each session at the Aretians Clubhouse in Little Stoke.

In the summer months play is back on the Little Stoke Playing Fields located at Aretians RFC, Station Road.

Little Stoke Social Club Raises Over £2,000 for CLIC Sargent

Friday, May 18th, 2012

We were pleased to be invited to Little Stoke Social Club again to witness the handing over of the fruits of the last twelve month’s fundraising efforts.

Every year the Club nominates a charity to benefit from the members’ generosity at fund raising events held throughout the year.  CLIC Sargent was chosen for the 2011/12 year as, in addition to being such a worthwhile local charity, life time LSSC member Rosemary Barton works as the team administrator at the local CLIC offices at Abbey Wood Business Park in Filton.

Local Fundraising Manager Kiren Fernandes (pictured centre) was delighted to collect the cheque for £2,090.00 pounds from committee members Pat Louca, Rosemary Barton, Tim Hewer and Andy Barton.  Tim, Club Chairman, commented how pleased he was that the Club had managed to match the fundraising efforts of the previous year in the current economic climate and praised the generosity of the Club’s members in achieving such an amount.

As in previous years, the Club raised funds by holding fun events such as ‘Deal or No Deal’, Mr & Mrs, a Race Night, a Club Fun night, a Rock ‘n Roll Evening, Strongest Man event and holding raffles on the days big sporting events.  Father and son members Steve and Andy Barton grew moustaches for ‘Movember’ and when other charities use the Club for fundraisers, there is no charge for the facilities but a donation is suggested towards the Club’s charity pot.  Lots of money was raised this way from skittles nights, Little Stoke Beach Party, DAWG and Bradley Stoke Radio Group amongst others.

The nominated charity for 2012/13 is Parkinson’s UK as ex-committee member Jim Brooks is affected by the condition.

Richard Gets on his Trike to Launch New Business

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

A new cycle repair business has just started in the Stokes, offering local cyclists efficient, affordable bike repairs when it suits them.  Bike Fix Bradley Stoke is unique as it is not only mobile, but uses a Dutch cargo tricycle to visit the customers and fix their bikes when it’s convenient for them.

The tricycle was specially imported as it can carry all the essential tools and materials, and can even tow other bikes if they need to go to the workshop.  It will become a familiar sight on the roads around the Stokes as it goes to customers for repairs and maintenance.

The proprietor of the new business, lifelong cyclist Richard Burton, said “Lots of people in the Stokes area have taken up cycling to save money and get fit, but they struggle to do bike maintenance, which is where Bike Fix Bradley Stoke comes in. Most problems can be fixed on the spot, at a time and place to suit the customer. The aim is to be affordable, reliable, and convenient.

The new business will specialise in helping cyclists get back on the road, fixing the things that are stopping people using their bikes more regularly, so that they can get the huge benefits of cycling, and will offer advice on cycling and what kind of bike to ride.

The business is designed to be as green as possible, which is why it’s using only pedal power to deliver the service,  so that carbon emissions and other pollution is minimised.

Members of the local cycling club, the Stokes Cycling Club, will receive a 10% discount.

Stokes Cycling Club Launches its first Mountain Bike Ride

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

The Stokes Cycling Club launches its first mountain bike ride, ten miles long, on this Saturday (17th September), leaving at midday from the Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre. Anyone reasonably fit with a mountain bike, is welcome to join in (children must be accompanied).

The leader, highly experienced rough stuff rider and qualified coach Andy Parker, will be giving tips on technique on the ride.

Andy said “As a first ride, it’s going to be fairly straightforward, with nothing too technical, so any kind of mountain bike will do as long as it’s in good condition. There are lots of rideable tracks in the area, and I plan to explore them all over the coming months and show people just how many there are.”

Club rides coordinator, Richard Burton, said “We’ve been running very successful road based bike rides for well over a year since we started, and we’ve decided that it’s time we expanded to include mountain biking – I might even give it go myself!”

The club has been running lots of on-road rides, from short family rides on local tracks to fifty mile rides for the hardened cyclists, and after requests from the public, have decided to branch out into mountain biking.
