Footsteps for Abigail – Inside Out West Special 20th June

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Everyone will remember the two local fundraising campaigns over the last couple of years in order to send two local children, first Toby and secondly Abigail, over to visit a very special surgeon, Dr Park at the St Louis Children’s Hospital in America in order to undergo a life-changing operation to enable each of them to walk independently.

Toby and Abigail have both made tremendous progress to date following their operations, but also there has been an amazing development locally with the first ever UK SDR surgery (Dr Park version) having been performed just up the road in Frenchay. The surgeon at Frenchay trained under Dr Park, who is renowned as the best in the world at this and has a 100% sucess rate and has performed over 2000 of these operations.

This development at  Frenchay has brought forward the BBC’s follow up on Abigail’s progress following her operation in December. The programme will be shown as an Inside Out West Special at 7.30 on BBC1 on 20th June .   Abigail is currently 5 months into a 12-month rehabilitation, so her progress is still on-going and she continues to improve.

The first programme on Abigail aired last November and is available to view here if you missed it.  Photo shows Abigail with ‘the amazing’  Dr Park.

Students at BSCS Raising Funds with Funny Feet for Abigail!

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

The young people at Bradley Stoke Community School raised an amazing £867.64 today for the Footsteps4Abigail campaign to help send 9 year old Abigail to the USA for an operation to help her walk.

The campaign, driven by Abigail’s mum, Carrie Newton-Smith, had declared 22 October ‘Funny Feet Day’ and has been busy encouraging local schools and businesses to do something funny, such as wear odd socks or strange shoes for the day, in order to raise funds for Abigail’s campaign.

Bradley Stoke Community School were happy to join in with the fundraising and organised a ‘no school uniform day’ for which students paid a minimum donation of £1 to NOT wear their uniform today. Some students fully entered into the fun of the day and came to school in their slippers and with ‘feet’ face-painted on their cheeks! A group of Year 8 students went even further, making a special effort to do an extra collection for Abigail asking teachers and friends to dig a little deeper and donate what they could spare. In just a few hours they had collected an additional £60!! Well done girls!

One of these Year 8 girls, Charlie, told me “We really want Abigail to be able to walk – we know just how very much it means to her and want to do what we can to help.”

Fundraising for Abigail reaches £20,000 –

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Fundraising at Currys Megastore Cribbs Causeway for Footsteps4Abigail. Photo shows Abigail and the team getting ready to fundraise the weekend away. A fantastic £1,923 was raised over the 2 days thanks to the support of friends and Currys staff.

Like 5 year old Toby Cox earlier this year (see previous web stories), 9 year old Abigail Newton Smith is trying to raise £36,000 to pay for an operation in the USA that is not available here in the UK. This operation will help her to walk, something she is currently unable to do. Mum, Carrie tell us “we have been good friends with the Cox family since Toby was a baby. When Toby’s mum Donna first discovered the Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy Surgery performed by Dr Park at the St Louis Children’s Hospital Missouri, it sounded too good to be true! I couldn’t understand why on earth we weren’t doing it here in the UK! In December we are therefore taking Abigail to St Louis to have the same surgery as Toby has had. St Louis is the world leader on SDR surgery and the results are astounding. The surgeon there, Dr T S Park, predicts that Abigail’s sitting and standing postures will improve. Her walking will improve significantly. Eventually she will be able to walk with crutches in all environments. She will have more energy and a greater endurance. He also says she will be able to walk in doors by herself. This could mean she will be able to live on her own when grown up.”

The £36,000 is the cost of the operation alone. The family will be funding all the flights and accommodation for the month stay in the USA themselves. A massive £20,000 has been raised so far with the community’s help!

Carrie Newton Smith, Abigail mum is pictured at the back alongside Toby Cox’s mum Donna who was giving the campaign her support, along with Toby who spent some of his time walking around the store unaided and even left his stick behind because he simply didn’t need it!

The second of the Currys Fun Weekends has been confirmed as 16 and 17 October. Abigail and Carrie would love to see you there!

Running for Abigail

Saturday, July 31st, 2010
Laura Woodward is mum to two boys Jake (6) and Theo (4) who attend Holy Trinity Primary School, where Toby Cox is about to move up into Year 1 from Reception. Laura has taken the huge step of entering the Bristol Half Marathon this September, running to raise funds for 8 year old Abigail Newton Smith who, like Toby, has Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. Also like Toby, Abigail is trying to raise the £36,000 necessary to undergo an operation in St Louis, America which will give her the chance to walk unaided.

Laura has never run such a distance before, having started running for fitness earlier this year and originally setting herself the target of the Bradley Stoke 10k, which she achieved in an amazing time of just under the hour. Having achieved this goal she was toying with the idea of the half marathan, but was really unsure whether or not she would be able to make the distance. Laura says “When Jaci (Matters editor) mentioned Abigail’s story, it was the push I needed to decide to enter the half marathon. I always felt I wanted to do more to help Toby, and having followed his mum’s blog during his trip to America, which quite often brought tears to my eyes, I really want to help give Abigail the same chance of this life-changing operation“.

Laura has started running regularly with local group “Soul Sisters” and is aiming to try and keep running for the whole 13.1 miles. As a working single mum, trying to find the opportunity to train can be difficult at times, but family and friends are all helping to lend a hand and the boys are rightly proud of their mum’s efforts and determination. See below for how to support Laura in her fundraising campaign for Abigail.

Laura says: “People who know me well, will know that running a half marathon will not come easy, I have been training hard but still have much to do…, I hope that you will all support me, or should I say support Abigail…I am running on behalf of a special eight year old girl Abigail, to raise money for an operation which will change her life forever.
