New Youth Structure for Bradley Stoke

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Voluntary Group secures over £60,000 to build a youth structure and improve park space.

Friends of Jubilee Green are delighted to announce they have achieved their fundraising target to build a much needed Youth Structure for Bradley Stoke.

They have been awarded a grant for £49,999 through the Community Spaces programme which is being managed by Groundwork UK as an Award Partner to the Big Lottery Fund.  Community Spaces is part of the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces initiative.

The project will deliver an innovative, community inclusive structure, that the young people of Bradley Stoke have been involved with every step of the way from design to helping build the structure.  The project will also improve some of the paths in the park to ensure accessibility to all.

Michelle Dent, Chair and Trustee of Friends of Jubilee Green comments; “We are absolutely delighted with the news.  Our volunteers have been working very hard over the last 3 years to secure a major grant to build this much needed structure. We have involved the young people of Bradley Stoke in each step of this project and we are looking forward to building elements of
the structure with them.”

Friends of Jubilee Green are also delighted that Bradley Stoke Town Council are giving their full support to this project through practical support and match funding.   The project will be delivered with the assistance of officers of South Gloucestershire Council and specialist contractors.  Work will be completed by September 2013.

Bradley Stoke Sports Day a Great Success

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

With thanks to the Bradley Stoke Town Council, the Friends of Jubilee Green and Stokes Cycling Club were able to host a completely FREE Community Sports Day, at the Jubilee Centre last weekend.

The afternoon consisted of many activities, including an assault course, a bike assault course, tug of war, a slow bike race, a sack race and an ‘on your bike’ egg and spoon race! Children of all ages (and some parents) joined in the activities, with prizes given to the winners which were donated by Bike Fix Bradley Stoke and Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

Inside the Jubilee Centre you could make your own medals, sea creatures and rosettes and enjoy a FREE tuck shop provided by Holy Trinity Church.

The children especially enjoyed the option to ‘bling’ their bike, which they were able to show off at the end of the day with a bike parade.

Friends of Jubilee will be hosting another event in September, so watch this space!

Queen of Wheatfield Arrives in Style!

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Imogen Roberts sent us this report on the Jubilee Celebrations at Wheatfield Primary School, along with this fabulous montage of photos taken on the day.  What a brilliant day!

“On Thursday 31st May, Wheatfield School celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in true Wheatfield style!

To start the day, the whole school gathered on the playground with flags to welcome their special visitor…the Queen!

The Queen of Wheatfield School (Miss Dursley, the Headteacher) arrived chauffer driven by Miss Dixon’s Dad in his Morris Minor!  The children warmly welcomed the special visitor, bowing and curtseying as she greeted them. Matthew (RC) said to his teacher, “I know that voice!” and Yusef (RC) exclaimed, “The Queen sounds just like Miss Dursley!”

As the ‘Queen of Wheatfield’ took to her throne, everyone stood to sing the National Anthem accompanied by Yuqi (6AH) on the piano. Each Year Group entertained her with ‘something typically British’. Everyone did a brilliant job and acts included a Madness song by Year 2, and a Beatles medley from Year 6. Everyone sang ‘My Queen’ a song adapted for the occasion.

Each child received an engraved medal, partly funded by the Friends of Wheatfield to commemorate both the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.

To finish the day the children had a Street Party in the hall, with Jubilee cake, biscuits and ice-cream. Charlotte (RC) remembered, ‘I liked the Street Party because we got to eat lots of food!’

It certainly was a day to remember, one to go down in our Wheatfield History book!”

Thank you Imogen for sharing your memories of the day.  I sure you will remember it for many years to come!

Great Atmosphere at Preschool Picnic in the Park

Friday, June 1st, 2012

The Jubilee weekend and festival celebrations kicked off this morning with the annual Preschool Picnic in the Jubilee Park.

Jubilee Green has had a name change with the unveiling this morning of a new plaque commemorating the park’s new “Fields in Trust” status.  This status ensures that the Queen Elizabeth II Field will remain a protected greenspace for future generations to enjoy as a park.

The Friends of Jubilee Green held a free craft session for youngsters to decorate their own bunting flag which proved very popular.  All the flags were then reunited to form a long strand of bunting which will be used tomorrow at the Festival to decorate the rock displaying the plaque.

The popular Circus tent was back with its usual array of hoops, cycles and juggling toys on offer and shows entertaining the toddlers and parents alike.  With a bouncy castle, bubbles, balloons and various craft stalls there was plenty to keep everyone amused with many enjoying their picnics despite the overcast sky.

The Friends of Jubilee Green also organised a fantastic free treasure hunt around the play area in which over 100 children participated.  Excited youngsters had to find 12 animal stickers to complete a farm picture before collecting their prize.

Tomorrow sees the main festival start from 11.30am at the Jubilee site with a packed programme of music and dance acts at the Jubilee Centre from 11.30am. Highlights include festival regulars Uncle Buck as well as up and coming local acts A Holiday Rumour and Little Intentions. There will be stalls and rides for the children as well as dog handling demonstrations and more. See further details and timings at: www.bradleystoke.gov.uk.

On Sunday 3rd June the focus switches to sport with the Bradley Stoke 10k around the Town and a 6 a-side cricket tournament at Bailey’s Court.

More photos from this morning can be seen on our on-line Flickr site.

How are you celebrating?

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Weekend fast approaching, we would love to hear how you are planning to celebrate.

Do let us know your ideas – are you having a local street party? Do send us in your photos of any local community events that you have enjoyed attending – we love to see them!

Have you seen or met the Queen at all over the years?  Do send us in your memories and/or photos if you have any.

In the last edition of Little Stoke Gifford Matters we produced a selection of photos for the Little Stoke Scouts 60th Jubilee which is also being celebrated this year.  One of the photos included the Queen visiting Filton High School, with the caption – ‘The Queen opening Filton High School but can anyone remember the year?’

We were delighted to receive feedback from local resident Claire Wood in response to this photo, which I am pleased to share here  - “I’m Claire Wood and I have lived in Stoke Gifford for the last 14 years. I grew up in Filton. I was really interested in looking on pages 6 and 7 of the Little Stoke Gifford Matters magazine at the old photos of scouting events. There is one picture at the bottom of page 6, with the Queen visiting Filton High School and the comment attached to it is that the Queen is opening Filton High but could anyone remember the year? I remember it very well, as I  was very much involved in the day, as a pupil of Filton High, at the time. It was NOT the opening of Filton High.  It was a visit made by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to celebrate her Silver Jubilee. The date is August 8th 1977.

We all gave up a day of our summer holidays to be there. It followed months of planning, preparation and training on how to behave and what to do.  She visited other places in Bristol on that day including the official opening (or naming, or something) of  Royal Portbury Dock at Avonmouth.

Just a funny story to add to this but a year later, on the last day of the summer term 1978, Mr Smith who was Head Master of Filton High at the time, gave the day’s notices and said after all the planning that had gone into the previous year’s visit by the Queen, we might not believe him if he told us that she was visiting again today! Actually what was happening was that the Queen was arriving by train at Bristol Parkway and going by car into the city of Bristol for an event and Mr Smith got all the pupils to go out and line the Mile Straight and wave as she passed by in her car!”

Thank you Claire for making contact and agreeing to share your memories.  It would be great to compile a few more memories/photos of the Queen visiting our locality in this, her Diamond Jubilee Year, so if you have anything to share please do get in touch by emailing jaci@mattersmagazines.co.uk

Weekend Results from BSTFC

Monday, March 12th, 2012

Bradley Stoke Town’s 1st XI put paid to the misery of defeat last weekend by claiming a 3-0 victory over Iron Acton Reserves. The win, thanks to goals from Matt Hull, Adam Hay and Matt Burgess, keeps the 1st XI’s promotion hopes alive and sends them into next Saturday’s home match against Bendix full of confidence.

In a game for the spectator, Bradley Stoke Town ‘A’ Team drew 4-4 against promotion hopefuls Westerleigh Sports. Goals from Jeremy Techer, Adam Sykes, Graeme Marshall and Dimitri Koubi secured a point from a game in which The Hornets were 2-0 up before finding themselves 4-3 down. It was Koubi who was the hero, as he grabbed the late equaliser to give the ‘A’ Team the point that they deserved.

It was super six for the second weekend in a row for the ‘B’ Team, as they destroyed lowly Wessex Wanderers ‘A’ 6-1 thanks to a quadruple from Mo Mortazavi and goals from Joe Ashton and Dan Corrick. The win fills the ‘B’ with confidence going into the final part of the season, and they still have an outside chance of promotion.

All four Bradley Stoke Town teams have games this Saturday with the 1st XI playing at The Jubilee Centre at 2.30pm, and the other three teams playing away. The bar is open to everyone at 4pm and children are welcome. For more information, visit www.bstfc.co.uk.

Royal Wedding Celebration Announced

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Bradley Stoke Town Council has announced that there will be a joint celebration at Jubilee Green on April 29th this year, when the official opening of the expanded council premises coincides with a Royal Wedding Party to celebrate the Royal marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton.

Local voluntary group The Friends of Jubilee Green will be helping to organise the event, along with event management company Re:Energise, who co-ordinate the annual Bradley Stoke Festival and popular Fireworks Display. April’s event will include a live broadcast of the wedding on a huge, elevated, outdoor screen and a ‘street party’ atmosphere with colourful bunting, a variety of refreshment providers and stalls from local vendors and community groups. Friends of Jubilee Green Celebrate Successful Grant Application

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

The Friends of Jubilee Green are delighted to have received a £350 grant from The Wakeham Trust.

The Wakeham Trust provides community grants, with a focus on neighbourhood projects, community arts projects and projects involving community service by young people. Its grant of £350 to the Friends of Jubilee Green will go towards the group’s Enablement Project, engaging the services of local park designer Alison Brown. The sum will be added to funds already received from Bradley Stoke Town Council, and from this year’s community fundraising at the park.

Since its formation in 2009 The Friends of Jubilee Green has successfully engaged the community in a number of events. Following the huge success of the Grand Opening of the Park, the group has held community bulb-planting events, several ‘Fun In The Sun’ activities, themed Easter and Summer treasure hunts in addition to a well-attended First Birthday celebration.

The Friends are now preparing to submit a major Lottery application for the planned Youth Structure at the park.

Chairperson, Michelle Dent, said “We are so excited to have received this grant cheque. Thanks to everyone involved. We are only a small group of volunteers and would love to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved. We are looking for energetic and enthusiastic people to join our friends group, who are able to provide ideas but more crucially, who can give time to organise and assist in the running of events and fund-raising activities.

“It is an exciting time to join our group. If you are interested in becoming a friend of Jubilee Green then please contact us via our website HERE”

Jubilee Green Park Celebrates 1st Anniversary

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Local children joined The Friends of Jubilee Green this afternoon in celebrating the first anniversary of the park.

The Friends, a local group of volunteers, put on a range of free craft activities, refreshments (generously provided by Starbucks), prizes and goody bags (kindly provided by Tesco and Bradley Stoke Matters). Children of all ages enjoyed decorating crowns and creating pictures showing their favourite equipment in the park, while parents and carers looked on and enjoyed hot drinks in the Woodlands Suite of the Jubilee Centre.

The event culminated in a parade around the park of over 30 children wearing their crowns and following Chair of The Friends, Michelle Dent. Michelle carried an impressive birthday cake which depicted a typical scene from the park. Given the number of children at the event, there was a huge sigh of relief when it was realised that there was indeed enough cake to go around!

Children were delighted to receive a free goody bag and they then enjoyed some parachute games led by The Woodcraft Folk, a local children’s group which meets weekly at Meadowbrook Primary school on Wednesday evenings.

One Mum, Tracy, commented: “What a lovely event. The park is a great place for my children to play and it’s even better when there are extra activities like this. My children have had a lovely time and I’d like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to the volunteers who organised this celebration.”

Matters Magazines was there to capture the whole event in photos – see our flickr pages for some great shots!

Preschool Picnic in the Park Blessed with Sunshine

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

The Bradley Stoke Festival kicked off in style this morning at the Preschool Picnic in the Park.

Despite the somewhat gloomy weather forecast for heavy rain at 11, in fact it could not have been more glorious!! The event was well attended with the children again being joyfully entertained by Professor Panic’s Circus, although it was noticed that they did appear to be one man down this year!

The volunteers group that is Friends of Jubilee Green also put on free activities for the children in the form of a treasure hunt around the park.

This was a fantastic start to what promises to be another great festival weekend. Check out the What’s On listing for more details of the weekend’s activities.
