BBC Radio Bristol Visits Matters Magazines

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

The popularity of the local Matters Magazines and the 2 community websites, www.bradleystokematters.co.uk and www.bishopstonmatters.co.uk seems to be spreading fast!

Hot on the heels of Points West presenter, Chris Vacher, who interviewed Jaci and Alison from Bradley Stoke Matters for a TV appearance aired a fortnight ago, local BBC Radio presenter, Kate Justice, dropped in today to speak to Kerry who runs the popular Bishopston Matters, along with Alison from Bradley Stoke and Little Stoke Gifford Matters.

Kate, who is standing in for Steve Yabsley this week, was interested to hear how Matters Magazines was first started by Jaci and Alison 6 years ago, after the pair recognised a need for a reliable and regular source of community news, along with information about local tradespeople and services. The publication which started life as a black and white newsletter with a circulation of just 6,000 copies per quarter, has grown to a group of individual ‘Matters Magazines’ which between them cover a massive 53,000+ households throughout North Bristol per quarter, plus an additional 4,000 households in Corsham, Bath. The interview was well-timed as it was an excellent opportunity to tell BBC Radio listeners about the imminent launch of the very latest Matters Magazine, Filton Matters.

The Steve Yabsley show is on tomorrow, Thursday 2nd June from 12 noon to 2pm on 94.9FM. www.bbc.co.uk

£50,000 NEW SOFTPLAY AT BRADLEY STOKE LEISURE CENTRE REVEALED

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

South Gloucestershire Leisure has invested £50,000 in a new softplay facility for Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre that opens tomorrow, Wednesday April 13.

The new “Labyrinth” concept has been designed to create a fun, fantasy world of dragons, knights and princesses. Young children and their families are invited to attend an open day where free sessions will run from 10.30am.

Softplay is one of the most popular activities for young children at the Centre and the £50,000 investment is aimed at getting children aged between 0-9 years more active. It has also been supported through sponsorship with Matters Magazines.

Dean Barney, Area Manager at South Gloucestershire Leisure, which runs Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre, said: “We are committed to helping families with young children encourage physical activity and explore their environment.

“As part of this there are multi-levels of fun, challenging activities, including climbing frames, slides, ball pools, crawl tubes, rope bridges and scramble nets. Children can dive in and get exploring on their own, with friends or interact with other children.

“Research has shown that children who are regularly involved in active play develop well on physical, mental and social levels. Softplay encourages them do this in a safe environment and the new Labyrinth concept has been designed with this in mind.”

Alison Davis, from Bradley Stoke Matters and Little Stoke Gifford Matters Magazine, said: “We’re proud to be helping support SGL with this fabulous new Labyrinth softplay – we know from many of our readers how well used and popular the site is and look forward to seeing the children make full use of it over the coming years.”

The Leisure Centre is also running a Labyrinth colouring competition for children. Entry forms can be picked up on the day.

‘Matters’ celebrates 5 years of being ‘in the community for the community’

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010
We are celebrating this month having been “In the Community, For the Community” now for 5 years. This time has simply flown by and, from humble beginnings, we have be fortunate enough to grow significantly, with the latest issue of Bradley Stoke Matters being the biggest issue to date !

We feel very proud for having been able to help numerous groups come together and grow over this time, as well as putting like minded individuals in touch with one another and really helping to encourage community cohesion. The success of the magazines, which is entirely funded by the advertisers and backed up by our community website, has enabled us to give approximately £10,000 back into community groups, schools and projects so far. At the recent Bradley Stoke festival alone we helped support 15 different groups and have been able to help fund an additional two local activities since this time.

We have really enjoyed bringing you all the community news and meeting so many local residents at all the events and activities that goes on across the area. We look forward to continue doing so in the years to come and hope you all agree that Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke and Stoke Gifford really do MATTER!

Thank You to Bradley Stoke WI for your fantastic Hospitality!

WI logoThe Bradley Stoke branch of the Womens’ Institute (WI) invited co-founders and editors of the Bradley Stoke and Little Stoke Gifford Matters Magazines, Jaci and Alison, to give a talk at their mid-May meeting.

A large group of WI members gave Jaci and Alison a warm welcome, and were very interested to hear how and why the local community magazines were first started, and how additional communities are now benefitting from their own Matters Magazines.

The WI members praised the local community magazines and website for being a mine of really useful local information, commenting that they are particularly helpful for finding out what’s on in the locality and for sourcing local tradespeople.

Alison said: “We would like to thank the Bradley Stoke WI for giving us such a warm welcome; it was a pleasure to meet you all.”
