Bradley Stoke Bowls Club is proud to have learned that Club President Mr Jim Durlacher and Mr Brian Newman have won a Community Award from the South Gloucestershire Council’s Chair’s Community Awards. This is in recognition of their extraordinary work and dedication as volunteers in setting up Bradley Stoke Bowls Club.

The pair were nominated by Councillor Ben Walker and will receive their awards at the Concorde Room BAWA on Thursday 18th April at 6.30pm.

Club member Sue Arnold told us “The Bowls Club is highly delighted that the pair’s hard work has been recognised and we would also like to express our thanks to their wives for all the fantastic support they give the Club too.”

The Chair’s community awards were established in 2003 to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution local unpaid volunteers make to life in South Gloucestershire.  They have since become an annual event and each year people are asked to nominate their local ‘community heroes’ ie people who have made a difference to their community.

Bradley Stoke Mayor and Local MP Open New Council Offices

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Cllr Charlotte Walker, Mayor of Bradley Stoke and Jack Lopresti, local MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke presided at the official opening of the Town Council’s new offices at the Jubilee Centre earlier today (Friday 14th September).

Both praised the achievement of the build and gave thanks to the team and council staff who had facilitated the move to the new premises.  Cllr Charlotte Walker added: “It is a pleasure to officially open the town council’s offices and take the opportunity to thank the staff who have worked so hard to achieve a smooth and efficient relocation”.¯

Cllr Brian Hopkinson told me that he was really pleased with how many residents had popped in to the new offices since the relocation in June.  “It has made us so much more accessible to residents now that we have such a central location”.  Cllr Hopkinson also explained aspects of the new build to me and its sympathetic nature with the existing Jubilee Centre.  He also pointed out that the new build has enabled an outside toilet to be built for the use of hirers of the courts and also visitors to the park who may be caught short.  This lack of facility at the Jubilee Green had often been criticised by parents with young toddlers who have been turned away from using the toilets inside the Centre – which is sometimes not possible if the facilities have been hired by a user.

The expense of building new offices as opposed to renting, either at the old Woodlands site or potentially in the WillowBrook Centre, has received some criticism from locals.  However, the offices have been built with the aid of a public works loan, the repayments on which come in cheaper than the council’s previous rental costs. The new offices therefore achieve the council’s two stated aims of delivering value for money and making it more accessible to local people – Cllr Roger Avenin, Chair of Finance Committee explains: “The Council’s administrative functions were previously housed in a rented office in the far north of the town. The new Jubilee Centre location is much more central and already well known by the public. Year on year we will see savings straight away from this project and, once the loan is paid off in 10 years’ time, the taxpayer will recoup approximately £28,000 pounds a year”.¯

1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group is Growing – Mayor Opens New Units

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Bradley Stoke has had its own scouting unit for 10 years and over this time the number of boys (and girls) involved has grown from 30 to the current 92. However, up until recently there were also 60-80 children on the waiting list to join! By far the highest wait list is for Beavers, which children can participate in from the ages of 6-8. Group Scout Leader Mark Gollop tells us “When I started helping with the 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group there were a lot of children on our waiting list to join. Over the last few months we have worked hard to recruit some more adult volunteers and we were able to open up a new 2nd Beaver Scout Colony last September and have just started a 2nd Cub Pack and new 2nd Scout Troop.”

Last night Bradley Stoke Mayor Ben Walker officially opened the new Cub and Scout sections at Bradley Stoke Community School. The move to these new premises gave the Group the opportunity to open the additional Cub and Scout packs, so there are now two groups of everything! Although there is still a waiting list to join Beavers, Mark is very pleased that there are now some spaces available for young people, boys and girls, in both the new Cub Pack and new Scout Troop. Cubs are aged from 8 to 10 years old and Scouts from 10 to 14 years old.

Beavers is still held at Holy Trinity Primary School but the move to hold the older sections at the Community School is hoped will give greater opportunities to the older children. The dining hall offers a much larger space for activities and there are wider options now available with the ability to swap the hire of the hall for the hire of one of the different facilities that BSCS has to offer. Also all the scouting equipment previously stored in Muller Road can now be contained at the school, which makes it more accessible.

Mark states his aim for the scouting unit to grow big enough to accommodate all the local young people who want to join, whilst still providing the best scouting experience possible. To open more sections, more adults are needed and not just to help out on the club nights. Mark was very keen to stress that there are plenty of background jobs that can be undertaken, such as PR, Media, Fund Raising, so if you have even just a couple of hours a month, do get in touch!

Wheatfield’s Wild about Nature! Launch Event this Saturday 26th March

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

The local community around Wheatfield Primary School in Bradley Stoke are being invited to join pupils, staff and parents from 11 am this Saturday, 26th March, to celebrate the launch of a new one year project that will help improve the local environment and enhance the area for wildlife. The project has received a grant of £9,450 from the Big Lottery Fund and £2,500 from the ‘Friends of Wheatfield School’.

The Mayor of Bradley Stoke, Cllr Ben Walker, will officially launch the start of the project by sending families off on a special ‘Bike it’ ride around the Town’s local nature reserve. Within the school grounds there will be an opportunity to get involved in a spring time treasure hunt and to build your own bird box and feeder. There’s also a chance to sow a sunflower seed and enter the tallest sunflower in Wheatfield’s competition! Refreshments and BBQ will also be available throughout the event.

“Building on our Outdoor Play and Learning Project, our school aims to embark on an exciting journey which will engage pupils, parents and our local community in a range of innovative projects that will see our local environment improved, benefiting wildlife and people’s well being”; commented Chris Dursley , Headteacher of Wheatfield Primary School. She added, “Starting with a launch event, we will invite local residents to come along and join our year long project, allowing us a unique opportunity to open the doors of our school to local residents to share in planned activities throughout the four seasons!”

Cllr Ben Walker, Mayor of Bradley Stoke, welcomed the funding and the innovative project that aims to make closer links with local residents and the school. He said “It’s wonderful to see our local schools taking an active part in helping to improve our local environment and getting children involved in educating parents on how to ‘green up’ our gardens is a fantastic idea!”.

John Morris, local resident and Chairman of a local community allotment, who helped secure the funding said, “The project includes making bird boxes and feeders for the school grounds and people’s gardens, hedge laying and dry stone walling training courses, so local householders can manage native hedges in their own gardens. We’ll also be focusing on a wildlife gardening project, raising people’s awareness of slug pellet free gardens, benefiting hedgehogs and frogs and creating wildflower meadows”.

The scheme will see the school work with a local conservation group to improve two local ponds, create new benches from carved timber and develop a mini nature trail. There will be activities throughout the year for the school and its wider community to participate in, including a special Apple Day event in October.

For further information on how you can get involved please call Wheatfield School on 01454 868610.

New Base for the Bradley Stoke Police Team Now Open

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

The Bradley Stoke Neighbourhood Police team now have a new base in Bradley Stoke, at the Willow Brook Centre.

The police ‘beat post’ was officially opened by Bradley Stoke’s Mayor, Ben Walker this morning (Wednesday 12 January).  Ben commented:  “I am delighted to be able to open this beat post from which our neighbourhood policing team will operate, to further improve the town’s policing.  We continue to work with and support our policing team to ensure Bradley Stoke benefits from some of the best services available throughout South Gloucestershire.

The new beat post provides a base in the community for PC Claire Fletcher and PCSO Paul Baxter, and has been part funded by Bradley Stoke Town Council.  PC Fletcher, back from maternity leave only this morning, told us “We are really grateful to the Willow Brook Centre and the Town Council for supporting this new base for us.  It will mean we can spend more time out and about in the community, without having to return to Filton police station to complete paperwork or make calls.

PCSO Baxter added: “The office is very much a base, not a mini police station – we will still spend most of our time out on patrol across the whole of Bradley Stoke.  It is a more convenient location than th epolice station for local people who want to make an appointment with us, and we will also publish times when the office willbe open for anyone to drop in and have a chat with us.

The other members of the Bradley Stoke team, PC Steve Palmer, PCSO Kirsty Flicker and PCSO Jason Green will continue to use Filton police station as their base, but may well help cover the beat surgeries, or ‘open office’ times at the Willow Brook Centre beat post.

The office is located on the ground floor, opposite Tesco, adjacent the disabled toilets and baby change facilities.

Bradley Stoke residents can contact any member of the neighbourhood team by calling 0845 456 7000, emailing ssnfilton@avonandsomerset.police.uk or through the website www.avonandsomerset.police.uk.

Bradley Stoke 10k Results & Photos

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

It was a very hot morning for the 400+ runners who entered the Bradley Stoke 10k organised by local women-only running group Sole Sisters. The race kicked off at 10am this morning and first runner back was Will New in a time of just 35 mins 17 secs. 2nd place went to Phil Lucker and third to Ben Andrews.

MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke, Jack Lopresti, also ran the race this morning, alongside our latest Mayor, Ben Walker.

The ladies race was won by Rozanne de Villiers in a time of 47 mins 52 secs, followed by Jo Hawkins and then Vicky Bressington.

Well done to all runners. It was a fantastic turnout and a very well run event. Thanks to Sole Sisters and all the sponsors and to Bradley Stoke Physio for providing well deserved leg massages for the runners – this proved a very popular service in the race aftermath!

This year’s run was raising funds for the Nicola Corry Support Foundation which helps young families cope with cancer.

All results are posted provisionally – full results will appear on the Sole Sisters website www.solesistersrc.com
