Local Schools Celebrate Book Launch

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Students at local primary schools in South Gloucestershire had their very own book launch in Waterstones Cribbs Causeway this week.

The book, “Gathering of the Winds” was created by artists Matthew Jeanes and Martin Maudsley along with pupils from St Chad’s Patchway, Charborough Road, Callicroft, Holy Family, Coniston, Wheatfield, Meadowbrook and St Michaels Stoke Gifford as part of the Fusion Festival organised by Patchway Community College and funded by Arts Council England. The stories were inspired by the Olympic Windsurfing and Sailing events in Portland and Weymouth, with the children inventing “Windy” characters, personifications of the wind, with wonderfully vivid results.

Richard Headon, the Artistic Director for the South West Weymouth Olympic events, spoke at the launch and said that: “The Gathering of the Winds book was exactly the sort of project we hoped would be created as part of the SW region wide Cultural Olympiad ‘Battle for the Winds’ celebration of the Olympic sailing at Weymouth and Portland in 2012. Both the artists and the school children involved really embraced the theme of the gathering the winds. Martin and Matt really inspired the children to create some wonderful windy tales illustrated by some fantastic and energetic images. It was great to be able to connect local young people with such a prestigious and international event.”

Impressed by the quality of the book itself, Waterstones in The Mall at Cribbs Causeway held the launch where Martin Maudsley will be told some of the stories written to local children. The event was also attended by Headteachers and Govenors of the school involved who agreed that they were incredibly proud of the work that has been produced and of being involved another legacy created from the 2012 Olympics.

Downing Street Recognition for Meadowbrook Bell Ringers

Monday, November 12th, 2012

The Meadowbrook Bell Ringers are delighted to have received a letter from 10 Downing
Street!

A group of Year 4 children from Meadowbrook Primary School meet every
Thursday lunchtime to practice ringing handbells. Emma M, Emma H,
Skyy, Katie and Hollie practised “happy birthday” on the handbells
and sent a recording on DVD to David Cameron for his birthday in October.
The Bell Ringers were thrilled to receive a very personal response from
Mr Cameron. In his letter, the Prime Minister thanks the Meadowbrook
Primary School’s Bell Ringing club for their kind thoughts on his recent
birthday. He mentions each child by name and comments on their talent and
enthusiasm. He goes on to say

"Bell ringing has an important part in the cultural history of our country;
indeed the ringing of bells across the United Kingdom was chosen as a
signal of the countdown to the opening ceremony of the London 2012
Olympic Games, and I am glad to see that we are encouraging a new generation
of bell ringers to carry on this tradition." He concludes by sending his best
wishes for the continued success of the Meadowbrook Bell Ringing Club.
The Meadowbrook Bell Ringers are now turning their attention to practising
Christmas carols in preparation for the Carol Service at the Willowbrook
Centre in December.

Mini-Orchard For Meadowbrook Primary School

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

John Lewis Cribb’s Causeway Partners have voted for Meadowbrook Primary School to receive a mini- orchard donated by the company. The orchard of English apple varieties was planted by children on the morning of 21st March. The project was co-ordinated by the Forest of Avon Trust, the local tree charity, which will be on hand to help plant the trees and provide guidance about how to look after them.

John Lewis Cribb’s Causeway employees were asked to nominate two local schools to receive two mini- orchards, with Meadowbrook Primary School and Bradley Stoke Community School being the lucky recipients. Meadowbrook School’s Green Team undertook the planting, supported by teachers, John Lewis representatives and Jon Clark from the Forest of Avon Trust. John Lewis Partners whose children attend the school, were also invited.

Alan Andrews, Community Liaison Co-ordinator, John Lewis Cribbs Causeway, said:
Working with Forest of Avon Trust and Meadowbrook Primary School has given us a real opportunity to make a difference to the children who attend. Our contribution to the local community is a big part of what makes our business different and our Partners are delighted to actively support such a good cause.

Jon Barr, Headteacher, Meadowbrook Primary School, said:
In January 2012 The Green Team children from our Year 4 came to see me to say they thought we needed more planting at school. Consequently we were thrilled to be chosen to receive the orchard by John Lewis and the Forest of Avon Trust as this will add significantly to the trees on our site. It is a particularly pleasing as we not only have parents of children who work for John Lewis Partnership but we also have support staff who are partners themselves.

Jon Clark, Executive Director of the Forest of Avon Trust. said:
Planting and caring for trees is a fantastic way of engaging children in the environment. By planting apple trees they will also benefit from shade, reduced pollution and also some great, healthy apples to eat. We are really grateful to John Lewis Cribb’s Causeway for their support for this project and look forward to working with them on similar projects in the future.

Opticians has Sights set on School Safety

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Children at Meadowbrook Primary School in Bradley Stoke will be seen more clearly this winter thanks to a donation of high visibility vests from their local opticians.

Specsavers in the Willow Brook Centre donated 300 hi-visibility vests to pupils at Meadowbrook this week. The vests will help to ensure the safety of children when walking to and from school and during school outings.

Ed Stanleigh, store director at Specsavers in Bradley Stoke, says: ‘Child safety is a huge concern for parents, especially on the roads as the dark mornings and early nights begin to set in. The vests will enable children to be seen more easily and will hopefully give parents peace of mind.’

Mr Jon Barr, headteacher atMeadowbrookPrimary School, says: ‘We’re thrilled with this kind donation from Specsavers. The vests will be a great help to the staff when our children are engaged in activities outside, allowing those supervising to keep an even closer watch over them.’

Bradley Stoke Matters was delighted to be invited along to this week’s whole-school assembly, where Rachel Wilde and Sana Zafar from the local Specsavers answered pupils’ questions about eye-sight tests, glasses and the new high viz jackets. Schools Work Together for Infant Music Festival

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Bailey’s Court Primary School today hosted the annual Infant Music Festival for Year 2 pupils, which was attended by children from all around the local area including Meadowbrook and Holy Trinity. This was a great opportunity for the local primary schools to get together and share their enjoyment of music.

This year’s theme was ‘animals’ and children had been practicing a number of animal-themed songs for the last few weeks, specially for this event. Pupils dressed up in animal costumes or as farmers or vets – notably there were a large number of cats! – to add fun to the event.

Not to miss out, many of the teachers joined in with the theme and dressed up too.

Following this morning’s large event at Bailey’s Court, many of the schools  held special performances for parents to enable them to share the children’s learning.

Pupils at Meadowbrook performed in front of Reception and Year 1 pupils, as well as their own parents, back in their school hall, combining delightful singing with actions. Some families had made a tremendous effort with the costumes – as you can see from the pictures shown.

Bethany told us “My favourite song is one about jellyfish, but I didn’t have a jellyfish costume so today I am a cat!”

The schools whose pupils walked to Bailey’s Court would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to the parents who volunteered their time to walk with the children to and from this event.

Meadowbrook Valentine’s Market

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Enterprising Year 6 pupils at Meadowbrook Primary School launched their Valentine-themed ‘Meadowbrook Market’ this week, in a bid to raise nearly £1,000 needed for pay for the coach on their forthcoming Year 6 Camp.

Two classes of ten-and eleven-year-olds have been planning and preparing products for this market for several weeks. Each child was encouraged to come up with an idea for a hand-made Valentines gift, plus to make a prototype. The favourite ideas were selected and then small teams of children worked together to refine each item and work in a production line to produce large numbers of the products – to the standards needed.

After lots of hard work, Year 6′s were delighted to hold their first ‘Meadowbrook Market’ after school yesterday – at which the very reasonably-priced gifts sold like hotcakes! On offer were lovingly iced valentines biscuits, scented love bags, purses and phone socks, hand-made chocolates, beaded bookmarks, hand-made Valentines cards, ‘love bug’ lollies, love mugs, chocolate-covered marshmallow and more!

The Market continues after school today and again on Thursday, from 3.30pm to 4.15pm in the Rabbits and Foxes classrooms.

Well to all the children and the teachers involved. We look forward to bring you news of how much this fundraising initiative raises.

Y6 Pupils Give Helping Hand To Shoppers

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Shoppers at the Bradley Stoke Tesco store had many pairs of helping hands at their disposal this evening.

Year 6 pupils from Meadowbrook Primary School were on the checkouts between 4pm and 6pm to offer shoppers some help packing their bags, whilst at the same time accepting donations towards their Year 6 Fundraising. The pupils hope to organise an end-of-year celebration, to mark the end of their time at primary school. With 48 children in the year and hopes of a not-to-be-forgotten day out and evening party, there is still plenty of fundraising to be done.

Ten 10-and eleven-year-olds manned the checkouts at a time, chatting to customers and working hard! The pupils enjoyed the experience, and were really pleased at the generosity of many people.

Sincere thanks from the Year 6 fundraising committee to everyone at Tesco for allowing the pupils to do their bag-packing stint, and for making the children feel so welcome.

Bradley Stoke’s Olympic Run

Friday, July 2nd, 2010
BSCS Students and teachers

Raring to go! The beginning of the 'Olympic Run' around Bradley Stoke

In celebration of National Sports Week and to promote working closely with their neighbouring schools, Bradley Stoke Community School organised two Olympic Runs on the afternoon of Thursday 1st July.

PE Teacher Ed Owen and seven Year 9 students ran with two specially hand-made ‘olympic torches’ to each of Bradley Stoke’s six primary schools in turn. Abbie Pearce, Duncan Bendall, Manga Ndlovu, Kate Brown, Sean Fahay, Jamie Williams and Will Macaulay set off from BSCS at 1.30pm on their 6+mile challenge.

Pupils and staff at St Mary’s Primary School gave the group a fabulous loud welcome, with cheers and by forming a human horseshoe for the runners to perform a lap of honour. The entourage collected two St Mary’s pupils, Tasha Draper and Nathan Hall, both in year 6, plus a chaperone , and continued their run to Baileys Court. Pupils from Baileys Court lined both sides of their playing field, clapping and cheering and enabling the runners to arrive in style. The pace had been so fast that the group were ahead of schedule, so a few impromptu races were held between the secondary school pupils and between the St Mary’s and Baileys Court pupils. The crowd went wild!

Heidi Sermulins and George Curnock, both in year 6, joined the run at Baileys Court, and continued with the BSCS students on to Meadowbrook. As they rounded the corner the group could hear the enthusiastic clapping and cheerig, and they were welcomed onto the school field with a massive human circle to run through, lined on both sides by pupils. The olympic torches were passed on to Sadelle and Jack , both in year 5 who could not wait to start their leg of the journey.

At Wheatfield there was yet more cheering, plus an impresssive Mexican wave from the whole school on the playground. Not content with putting two children forward for the event, Wheatfield produced 5 runners: year 6 Adam Thorpe and Matthew Farrant; year 5 Rebecca Halford and Emily Smart plus year 4 Matthew Binding. All 5 enjoyed the 0.8 mile run to Holy Trinity (they had looked up the distance so knew what they were letting themselves in for!)

Sports Day was in full flow at Holy Trinity school when the group arrived, though this did not dampen the welcome given. The runners enjoyed a lap of honour inside a human circle on the playground, before picking up the new team members Dominic Williams-Sarkar and Tasha Okoye. At this stage the year 9 runners were beginning to tire, so the year 6′s had to be asked not to run too fast for fear of leaving the older pupils behind!

On arrival at Bowsland Green, the last of the 6 primary schools, year 9′s took the opportunity to lie down on the grass for 2 minutes – but were soon on their feet again taking part in a couple of sprinted laps around the playing field – much to the delight of all the onlookers. Tejaswi Tiruvuru and Ben Sayers, both in year 6, took the olympic torches and joined the team for the final leg of the challenge back to BSCS. By this time, everyone was grateful to PE teacher, Ian Henry, who showed them a short-cut down through the Three Brooks Nature Reserve.

The team arrived back at BSCS to cheers from fellow students just after 3pm – well ahead of schedule and enthused by the experience. Tejaswi from Bowsland Green summed up everyone’s thoughts when she said “That was tiring but great fun!”

Bradley Stoke Matters followed the whole event with a camera (by bike) and you can see a range of photos of the whole challenge on our flickr album.

Wheatfield Pupils

Wheatfield Pupils set the pace for BSCS students to keep up!

At the same time a Senior Olympic Run took place, with BSCS pupils and a member of staff taking their own olympic torch between the schools in the Concorde Partnership – from Bradley Stoke to Patchway, to Filton High and back to BSCS.

The events were a great success, and culminated in a joint schools cross country festival in the late afternoon involving pupils in years 3 to 6. Congratulations to Dena Young and Ed Owen for organising such a great day!

We are pleased to have posted a full set of photographs depicting the challenge from beginning to end on our Flickr photo album. Do feel free to have a browse.

Patchway Hosts Primary Pupils’ Music Day

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Schools join forces for music performance

Local primary school pupils enjoyed a music day at Patchway Community College on Thursday 24th June.

Year 5 pupils from Meadowbrook and Wheatfield joined year 4 and 5 pupils from Stoke Lodge for a whole day of

rehearsing songs and music, organised by Mrs Munroe of Patchway Community College. The day culminated in a one hour after-school performance involving all the children, which was well-attended by parents and families.

This is the second year that Patchway has run the joint schools music activity, and plans are in place to make this an annual event. Mrs Munroe praised the pupils for their excellent behaviour throughout the day, and for their fantastic performance.

Annabelle, year 5 at Meadowbrook said “It was great fun spending a whole day on music and singing, and I enjoyed making friends with children from other schools.”
