Local Teen Queen Needs Our Support – Get Voting!

Thursday, January 17th, 2013

BSCS schoolgirl through to the semi-finals of Teen Queen UK 2013.

Tasha Mason (13) a pupil at Bradley Stoke Community School, has been selected from an initial 19500 entrants into the semi-finals of the annual ‘Teen Queen UK’ beauty pageant.  Tasha was invited to enter  the competition whilst visiting ‘The Clothes Show Live’ in Birmingham last year with her mother Vicky.

She’s now battling for a place in the London final via a public vote and is hoping for as much community support to get her through.  Tasha always hoped to have a career as a TV, film & theatre makeup artist but this exciting opportunity has instead given her the chance to experience a modelling career at first hand!

Tasha said ‘I’m really hoping that as many people in the community and my school support me as I’d love to represent Bradley Stoke at a national level!’

To vote for Tasha, please text the abbreviation TQ27 to 81319 (texts will be charged at 75p plus your standard network charge).  From a landline call 0900 596 1000 then enter 27 (a landline call costs 75p).  VOTERS MUST BE OVER 16 OR HAVE THE BILL PAYER’S PERMISSION

The top two girls with the most votes will go through to the final. Voting is for 2 weeks only and closes @ 11.30pm on 31st January.

Not only does the competition give young girls the opportunity to go through to an exciting grand final with great prizes, but monies raised also support The Mad Foundation who, along with Teen Queen, encourage the importance of fundraising and offer Miss Charity category winners the opportunity to take Teen Queen monies raised, to humanitarian projects all around the world (see www.madventurer.com for more information)

Queen of Wheatfield Arrives in Style!

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Imogen Roberts sent us this report on the Jubilee Celebrations at Wheatfield Primary School, along with this fabulous montage of photos taken on the day.  What a brilliant day!

“On Thursday 31st May, Wheatfield School celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in true Wheatfield style!

To start the day, the whole school gathered on the playground with flags to welcome their special visitor…the Queen!

The Queen of Wheatfield School (Miss Dursley, the Headteacher) arrived chauffer driven by Miss Dixon’s Dad in his Morris Minor!  The children warmly welcomed the special visitor, bowing and curtseying as she greeted them. Matthew (RC) said to his teacher, “I know that voice!” and Yusef (RC) exclaimed, “The Queen sounds just like Miss Dursley!”

As the ‘Queen of Wheatfield’ took to her throne, everyone stood to sing the National Anthem accompanied by Yuqi (6AH) on the piano. Each Year Group entertained her with ‘something typically British’. Everyone did a brilliant job and acts included a Madness song by Year 2, and a Beatles medley from Year 6. Everyone sang ‘My Queen’ a song adapted for the occasion.

Each child received an engraved medal, partly funded by the Friends of Wheatfield to commemorate both the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.

To finish the day the children had a Street Party in the hall, with Jubilee cake, biscuits and ice-cream. Charlotte (RC) remembered, ‘I liked the Street Party because we got to eat lots of food!’

It certainly was a day to remember, one to go down in our Wheatfield History book!”

Thank you Imogen for sharing your memories of the day.  I sure you will remember it for many years to come!

How are you celebrating?

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Weekend fast approaching, we would love to hear how you are planning to celebrate.

Do let us know your ideas – are you having a local street party? Do send us in your photos of any local community events that you have enjoyed attending – we love to see them!

Have you seen or met the Queen at all over the years?  Do send us in your memories and/or photos if you have any.

In the last edition of Little Stoke Gifford Matters we produced a selection of photos for the Little Stoke Scouts 60th Jubilee which is also being celebrated this year.  One of the photos included the Queen visiting Filton High School, with the caption – ‘The Queen opening Filton High School but can anyone remember the year?’

We were delighted to receive feedback from local resident Claire Wood in response to this photo, which I am pleased to share here  - “I’m Claire Wood and I have lived in Stoke Gifford for the last 14 years. I grew up in Filton. I was really interested in looking on pages 6 and 7 of the Little Stoke Gifford Matters magazine at the old photos of scouting events. There is one picture at the bottom of page 6, with the Queen visiting Filton High School and the comment attached to it is that the Queen is opening Filton High but could anyone remember the year? I remember it very well, as I  was very much involved in the day, as a pupil of Filton High, at the time. It was NOT the opening of Filton High.  It was a visit made by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to celebrate her Silver Jubilee. The date is August 8th 1977.

We all gave up a day of our summer holidays to be there. It followed months of planning, preparation and training on how to behave and what to do.  She visited other places in Bristol on that day including the official opening (or naming, or something) of  Royal Portbury Dock at Avonmouth.

Just a funny story to add to this but a year later, on the last day of the summer term 1978, Mr Smith who was Head Master of Filton High at the time, gave the day’s notices and said after all the planning that had gone into the previous year’s visit by the Queen, we might not believe him if he told us that she was visiting again today! Actually what was happening was that the Queen was arriving by train at Bristol Parkway and going by car into the city of Bristol for an event and Mr Smith got all the pupils to go out and line the Mile Straight and wave as she passed by in her car!”

Thank you Claire for making contact and agreeing to share your memories.  It would be great to compile a few more memories/photos of the Queen visiting our locality in this, her Diamond Jubilee Year, so if you have anything to share please do get in touch by emailing jaci@mattersmagazines.co.uk
