Leading Choir Conductor is coming to BSCS on Saturday 22nd September

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Grenville Jones lives in Bath and has been featured on TV and Radio across the World.

He is conductor of the ‘Last Choir Standing’ Bath Male Choir who reached the finals of the BBC show 3 years ago, gaining an audience of millions. Since that time, the BBC have screened the programme across the World and the choir have welcomed visitors to their rehearsal room from as far a field as Australia and South Africa!

Grenville leads a number of music projects and is the founder of the Golden-Oldies Charity. ‘Goldies’ as it has become fondly known brings music to people who live in isolation and now runs its fun singing sessions across the West and South Wales. Sir Cliff Richard is Patron of Goldies and one of the charity projects is called Jubilee Time after Time, which encourages schools to open their doors to the elderly in their communities.

Funded by the Big Lottery, and as a representative of Golden-Oldies, Grenville was invited to the Queen’s Jubilee Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in May when he was presented to the Queen.

He enjoys the reputation of “getting people of all ages to sing.” He works regularly for the BBC and last November linked with Gareth Malone in London as the choir leader who took the West Country’s representative youth choir in a BIG SING which linked choirs across the UK.

If you like to sing then this day is for you!  Billed as a community fun singing day for EVERYONE, the workshop and evening concert will raise money for the community school and the famous Bath Male Choir will also be taking part in the evening show.  Grenville told us: “Come along and bring your friends. Everyone who takes part in the Workshop will be singing at the concert in the evening in a fantastic finale!”

Grenville’s busy schedule means that he can only take a limited number of workshops per year. Early in 2012, he linked with ACM Gospel Choir leader, Mark De-Lisser for a sell-out Workshop on the Isle of Wight. He was recently also asked to lead a BBC Wiltshire Community Choir who took part in the Salisbury Olympic Flame celebrations.

In July he was delighted to receive an Honorary Degree from Bath Spa University in recognition for his contribution to music.

Tickets for the Workshop AND Evening Concert at BSCS on 22nd September are priced at just £10 for adults and £6 for Juniors (under 15)  – they are selling fast!  Please call Jody Chorley on 01761 472468 Mon-Thurs 9.15am-2.30pm to book tickets.

All profits will be donated to Bradley Stoke Community School funds.

The Circus Comes to Town at Little Stoke Primary School!

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Little Stoke Primary School hosted the ‘The Circus Comes to Town’ on Tuesday 10th July, a musical festival enjoyed by over 200 Key Stage One children from Little Stoke and surrounding schools.  The exciting event was organised by Christine Wright, a Music Adviser, from the South Gloucestershire Music Hub also based at the school.

All the children dressed up for the occasion as clowns, strongmen, lions, trapeze artists and acrobats and accompanying adults were also in costume.  It was a wonderful occasion for all the children as they sang songs, acted out events at the circus and paraded in their fantastic costumes.

New Mexican Restaurant is a Huge Hit!

Sunday, June 24th, 2012

We were absolutely delighted to receive a telephone call from Gemma Matthews, a year 6 pupil at Baileys Court Primary School, inviting us to dine at Bradley Stoke’s newest restaurant ‘The Mexican Wave’.

Unfortunately it was a one-day only venture so if you weren’t there you missed a treat!

All the year 6 pupils were involved in the fundraising project to transform the kitchen and classroom area into a Mexican Restaurant for the day.  Every child was involved, undertaking literally everything to do with the day themselves, from initial research, recipe trial and selection, menus, ingredient lists, posters, decorations, as well as cooking and preparing the food on the day.  Each pupil had to undergo an interview for each job position and selections were made and positions appointed.  The menu offered nachos and dips, followed by your choice of a selection of mexican dishes such as chicken fajita, vegetarian chilli, with rice and refried beans.  The chefs also made their own fresh lemonade which was readily available.  Dessert was fresh fruit.  The entire menu was absolutely delicious and the waiting staff were incredibly attentive!

I arrived at changeover time from one sitting to the next and was amazed how quickly the team cleared and reset the tables – a fantastic display of teamwork and efficiency!  The marketing team had done an equally successful job as both lunch sittings were full!

Year 6 Pupil Gurpreet Singh told me “It’s been loads of fun today.  Everybody’s been complimenting us”

With two cafe sessions also taking place mid morning and mid afternoon with the children serving tea/coffee and cakes (all made by themselves) and two lunchtime settings at 12.00noon and 1pm the team were certainly kept busy.  A tremendous effort.  Well done Year 6, we hope you have raised enough for your Year 6 Year Books!

How are you celebrating?

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Weekend fast approaching, we would love to hear how you are planning to celebrate.

Do let us know your ideas – are you having a local street party? Do send us in your photos of any local community events that you have enjoyed attending – we love to see them!

Have you seen or met the Queen at all over the years?  Do send us in your memories and/or photos if you have any.

In the last edition of Little Stoke Gifford Matters we produced a selection of photos for the Little Stoke Scouts 60th Jubilee which is also being celebrated this year.  One of the photos included the Queen visiting Filton High School, with the caption – ‘The Queen opening Filton High School but can anyone remember the year?’

We were delighted to receive feedback from local resident Claire Wood in response to this photo, which I am pleased to share here  - “I’m Claire Wood and I have lived in Stoke Gifford for the last 14 years. I grew up in Filton. I was really interested in looking on pages 6 and 7 of the Little Stoke Gifford Matters magazine at the old photos of scouting events. There is one picture at the bottom of page 6, with the Queen visiting Filton High School and the comment attached to it is that the Queen is opening Filton High but could anyone remember the year? I remember it very well, as I  was very much involved in the day, as a pupil of Filton High, at the time. It was NOT the opening of Filton High.  It was a visit made by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to celebrate her Silver Jubilee. The date is August 8th 1977.

We all gave up a day of our summer holidays to be there. It followed months of planning, preparation and training on how to behave and what to do.  She visited other places in Bristol on that day including the official opening (or naming, or something) of  Royal Portbury Dock at Avonmouth.

Just a funny story to add to this but a year later, on the last day of the summer term 1978, Mr Smith who was Head Master of Filton High at the time, gave the day’s notices and said after all the planning that had gone into the previous year’s visit by the Queen, we might not believe him if he told us that she was visiting again today! Actually what was happening was that the Queen was arriving by train at Bristol Parkway and going by car into the city of Bristol for an event and Mr Smith got all the pupils to go out and line the Mile Straight and wave as she passed by in her car!”

Thank you Claire for making contact and agreeing to share your memories.  It would be great to compile a few more memories/photos of the Queen visiting our locality in this, her Diamond Jubilee Year, so if you have anything to share please do get in touch by emailing jaci@mattersmagazines.co.uk

Holy Family Stars Soar to Success

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Fourteen pupils from Holy Family Primary School in Stoke Lodge have just taken part in the prestigious Mid Somerset Speech and Drama Festival for the second year running. Following weeks of hard work and intense rehearsals, the nervous eight to ten year olds set off to display their talents in front of a panel of esteemed judges.

The atmosphere was tense as Stephanie Palmer, aged 9, entered the verse speaking category. She was against 42 competitors and had to perform the poem off by heart. She spoke eloquently and the judges were overwhelmed with her recital, giving her first place! Stephanie stated, “I felt like a star!”

Another exceptional performance was prepared by Kundai Vurayayi, aged 10, who did a beautiful presentation of ‘Elephants’, by Alan Brown. Kundai performed against 37 other children and was only one point off the winner – a fantastic second place!

The group performance consisted of all fourteen children who gave an awe-inspiring rendition of ‘The Emperors’ New Clothes’. With no props or costumes, the children had to bring the story alive through their fantastic use of voice; their expert stage directions; and their phenomenal team work. Joseph Sharman, who played the Emperor commented, “It was an excellent day and I was really glad that we won.”

The judges were so impressed with them, that they were awarded an ‘Outstanding’ grade and were given first place. David Biddle (the adjudicator) even wrote,”This really was tremendously entertaining.” To the children’s delight, they were also selected to play at the ‘Grand Concert’ at the Guildhall in front of the Mayor of Bath.

All of this would have not been possible without the amazing Mrs Clare Parsons, who spent time and effort working with the children in order to give them this fabulous experience.

A huge well done to Holy Family School and particularly to all the children and staff involved – what a fantastic result and a very proud moment!
