Want to make Your community better?

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

If you are a resident of South Gloucestershire who cares about your community and wants to make it a place to be proud of, look out for a campaign that could be right up your street.

South Gloucestershire Council launched a radio and poster campaign on Monday (11th October), encouraging people who live in the area and want to get involved to help get things done to join a network of Safer Stronger Community Organisers.

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for communities, said: “There are many benefits to signing up, ranging from improving your skills and knowledge to get on at work and in life, to making real changes happen in your local community by putting forward your ideas and influencing local decision making. South Gloucestershire’s local campaign complements the coalition Government’s Big Society agenda which encourages more people to get involved in community life. You can register your interest at www.mybettercommunity.com whatever your age, but we are particularly interested in hearing from you if you are aged 18-35, as this age group isn’t represented enough and we want your voice to be heard.”

The campaign is running in conjunction with the coalition Government’s plans for a “Big Society” which encourages more people to get involved in community life.

Heart FM radio will be running radio advertisements between October 11 and 31, backed by a poster campaign and a webpage. There will be three evening information events held during November for people who have registered an interest in taking part; 10 November in Thornbury, 18 November in Yate and 24 November in Kingswood.

Further information is available on the website www.mybettercommunity.com or by calling 01454 868171.

Planning for Future Development - want to have your say on the South Gloucestershire Core Strategy, but need to find out more? The Core Strategy is the main planning document for guiding and managing new development and change in South Gloucestershire up to 2026. Its purpose is to identify where new housing and jobs will go, as well as protecting what is valued about the area. The Strategy will also identify what services, facilities and infrastructure (such as green spaces, roads, public transport, schools, shops and health centres) are needed and when and how this will be achieved.

Call from Public Leads to four Arrests: Police Bulletin

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Police have praised a member of the public who reported seeing people acting suspiciously at a house in Bradley Stoke in the early hours today, Monday July 12 2010.

Four men were arrested nearby within 10 minutes of the call. A 28-year-old man and three teenagers aged 18, 17 and 15 remain in police custody.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Clive Johnson said: “We rely on this sort of information from the public to help us keep our streets safe. There are some simple steps we can all take to deter thieves from targeting our homes.”

  • Mark your property with your postcode and register valuables on the national property database at www.immobilise.com. This deters thieves because it helps police prove property has been stolen, as well as increasing your chances of getting it back should the worst happen.
  • Make sure fences and gates are sturdy with good quality fittings
  • Use a good quality padlock to secure your shed
  • Make sure ladders and tools are secured otherwise a thief could use them to break into your home

Volunteers help to keep Little Stoke and Stoke Gifford safer

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Volunteers from the community are helping neighbourhood police keep Little Stoke and Stoke Gifford safe. Since the volunteers signed up in autumn 2009 they have helped police identify anti-social behaviour (ASB) hotspots, enabled officers to seize alcohol from underage drinkers, identified 60 speeding vehicles and carried out community clean-ups.

Neighbourhood PC Mark Graham said: We asked for volunteers to help us tackle the three issues that the community had told us were their priorities: speeding, ASB and littering.

These people are making a real difference to their community. Making the neighbourhood safer and stronger is a team effort. Police work with other agencies like South Gloucestershire Council, but we need the support of local people as well.

Volunteers are vetted and trained as:

Community wardens, who patrol in pairs identifying potential ASB hotspots so that a police team can attend or

Community Speed Watch members, who use speed guns to carry out checks on traffic at hotspots identified by residents. They take the registration details of speeding vehicles and the police send the drivers a warning letter.
People who volunteered to help collect litter were referred to an existing local group and the councils Street Care team.

PC Graham said: Information from the volunteers is helping us target our patrols more effectively to tackle community priorities. With just a few more volunteers we could make even more of a difference.

Anyone who wants to join the volunteer group can contact the neighbourhood team at Filton Police Station by calling 0845 456 7000 or e-mailing ssnfilton@avonandsomerset.police.uk

The next public meeting to discuss policing priorities for the area will be held at Little Stoke Hall at 7pm on June 30 2010.

Anyone unable to attend the meeting can raise any policing issues with the team by calling Filton Police Station or visiting the police website – www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/inyourarea
