Patchway Judo club has National award winning Judo volunteers!

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Saturday 10th November three Bristol judo volunteers and a group of Supporters drove to the Car Heritage museum in Warwick to attend the British Judo Association Annual awards evening.

All three had been shortlisted to the last four to receive their awards, public had been voting to put them in Gold, Silver or Bronze positions.

Two award recipients, from Patchway Judo Club won silver awards. Emma Peacock the clubs Treasurer, for Club volunteer of the year for not only her Treasurer award, all the extra above and beyond volunteering she does at the club and in the county.

Alex Bright one of the clubs Instructors, won his for Young volunteer of the year. Alex catches two buses from his home in Knowle to coach at the club (www.patchwayjudo.org) on Tuesday evenings as well as coaching on a Saturday at the club.

This is the second award Alex won in a week, as he also was runner up Young Coach of the year for South Glos at their awards hosted by Geoff Twentyman.

Also receiving an award was an honorary member of the club, Derek Johnson. He has been involved in the club as an official for over 30 years. Derek, who is the head coach Long Ashton Judo club, won Gold National Referee award, beating an International referee who had officiated at the Olympics. Derek has refereed locally for almost 50 years there isn’t a competition that happens in Bristol without Derek refereeing and barely one in the south west!

The three were presented their awards by 2012 Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons.

Medals for Volunteers

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

Not only do Patchway Judo players bring home the medals and trophies, their volunteers do too!

Most recently Emma Peacock, Club Treasurer, has made it through to the top 4 National award for Club Volunteers and not to be out done Alex Bright, 17, has made it through to the top 4 National award for the Young Volunteer Award. To see whether they receive the Gold, Silver or a Bronze award there is now an open vote for supporters to vote for them and the other candidates.

Emma and Alex didn’t know they were being nominated and were shocked and pleased to have not only been nominated but to have got to the finals. As you can see from their judo kits they are both active judo players as well!

These two are not the first volunteers to be awarded volunteer awards this year, Club Coach and Secretary, Alison Finn, won the o18 Filton unsung hero award in July and a few months ago club chairman, Andrew Phelps, won South Glos Chair award for his services to volunteering, as a bonus he got to meet Earl and Countess of Wessex at a lunch for the volunteers.

You may well have gathered that volunteering is big part of the club, with it being run entirely by volunteers, from coaching to “back room” staff keeping the club going!

The club is only one of two silver club mark clubs in the area and is working on Gold, the highest level , which they hope to be awarded shortly.

Chairman, Andy Phelps, said that “it is very important to the club that we are a “family club” and all the family are involved. We have a fantastic group of volunteers, with parents getting involved all the time. This ensures we can support all players to be the best they can be, which is our club motto”.

Alison Finn said “the whole club is really pleased that Emma and Alex have made it to the top four.  We are looking forward to attending the awards evening in November and are hoping that the two new Olympic medalists will make an appearance at the evening too”.

If you would like to get involved or have a go, check out Patchway website www.patchwayjudo.org.uk

Poppy Appeal Launched by Stoke Gifford TRBL

Monday, October 31st, 2011
On Friday (28th October) the Stoke Gifford Branch of The Royal British Legion (TRBL) launched their Poppy Appeal locally at Bristol Parkway Station.

The station is one of the main sites for the branch’s fundraising efforts along with Sainsbury’s in Stoke Gifford and the Willow Brook Centre / Tesco’s in Bradley Stoke. The Branch also has many static tins / Poppies  over the area too, and it is very grateful to all venues for their support for the annual appeal.

The Stoke Gifford Branch of the  The Royal British Legion not only covers Stoke Gifford, but also Little Stoke, Filton and Bradley Stoke. The National 2011 Poppy Appeal officially launched on 27th October, and celebrates its 90th Anniversary this year. GLOSSFM: “Come and Join us!”

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

GLOSSFM is inviting local groups to come up with their own programme ideas for broadcast this autumn.

The community radio station will be on air for four weeks, from October 31 to November 27, and is keen to get more people from its listening area involved in its programmes.

There is so much of interest going on in South Gloucestershire and it would be marvellous if GLOSSFM could reflect that,’ said director David Wrench. ‘We would like local groups and organisations to think about preparing programmes of their own, then to submit their proposals to programming@glossfm.org . We can organise training if necessary.’

GLOSSFM broadcasts twice a year on the radio, in spring and autumn, with each broadcast lasting four weeks. It also puts out a year-round webcast which you can listen to while you surf the net – log on to www.glossfm.org to listen live, and to find out more information about the station.

At the moment internet broadcasts are largely music-orientated, with some presenters putting on live shows. Tuesday nights, for example, often feature Gary Price from 6pm, followed by Phil and Gav’s Party Anthems at 8pm.

Syndicated programmes are also broadcast such as The New Music Show at Sunday 10am, repeated Tuesday 10pm, and Infosound, a news and information service for the blind and partially sighted, which is broadcast on Tuesday at 10am. For a full programme schedule go to www.glossfm.org/schedule .

GLOSSFM will soon be looking for a webcast manager with a view to upgrading its webcasts with more live programming, plus repeats of favourite FM programmes.

The station is run entirely by volunteers, from the receptionists on the front desk to the presenters, managers and ad reps. Originally called Thornbury FM, broadcasts began in 2005. The station changed its name to GLOSSFM in 2009 when a new mast enabled it to be heard across a much wider area in South Gloucestershire.

Guiness World Record Attempt Awaiting Confirmation

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

A Bristol-based hockey club is awaiting confirmation of its new Guinness World Record™ for the longest hockey match in history.

Dozens of local volunteers got involved in the hope of earning a place in history and to help save the lives of premature and critically ill babies.

South Gloucestershire Hockey Club’s (SGHC) goal was to set a new Guinness World Record™ for the longest ever hockey match, beating the previous record of 30hrs 15mins. The challenge was launched in order to raise funds for the Cots for Tots Appeal, a £1m drive to provide vital equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the city’s St Michael’s Hospital.

The marathon match took place on May 28th and 29th at Bradley Stoke Community School, and the club raised an impressive £1,900 even before the match began.

Organiser Darren Bane, an SGHC player and the father of a boy who was born more than three months early and spent the first six months at St Michael’s Hospital, said the event a great success. In addition to hockey players, the club received help from the local community in the form of independent witnesses to log key times and events, as part of an evidence package needed for Guinness in support of the world record claim.

Bradley Stoke’s Town Mayor, Cllr Ben Walker, blew the whistle to start the match at 9am on Saturday May 28th. The picture above shows a champagne celebration (spot the cork!) taken some 31 hours later.

The players had to overcome some nasty weather – strong winds and driving, misty, rain, not to mention extreme fatigue. By the time they finished, it looked more like an outing for the Ministry of Silly Walks than a hockey match, due to the leaden limbs of most of the players. But they persevered, and were bolstered by a good gathering of spectators to cheer them on at the end. Huge thanks to the school, Tesco, the witnesses, stewards and timekeepers, without whom it would not have been possible.

Darren told Bradley Stoke Matters “The sponsorship money is still coming in; at present we’ve just gone past the £4,400 barrier, and I KNOW of at least another £250 to come, so I am starting to seriously think that we may end up raising around £5,000, which will be awesome. Many of us are still aching and hurting, but it has been universally agreed that the “no pain, no gain” motto applies; it was all worth it!”

“The other thing that is happening now (apart from continuing recovery) is that we are putting together our evidence package for Guinness, which some coverage on your website will very much form part.”

Thumbs Up For FOJG Treasure Hunt

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

There were smiles all round at yesterday’s Preschool Picnic at Jubilee Green, with a host of fun activities laid on activities – mostly free – for young children.

Parents were able to enjoy a leisurely coffee and cake, while their children took advantage of face painting, sit-on toys, balloon modeling and bouncy castle.

Fabulous feedback was received from parents, grandparents and young children about the Friends of Jubilee Green’s Treasure Hunt. Devised by Michelle Dent and Helen Lane, the game consisted of locating twelve colourful envelopes full of fun stickers, hidden all around the park. The children were challenged to find all the envelopes stick the matching stickers onto their answer sheets – or even over their T-shirts.

Sally commented: “This treasure hunt is such a good idea. My daughter really enjoyed it – she loves stickers!”

As a member of the Friends of Jubilee Green, I thoroughly enjoyed helping to run the activity. It was a real joy to see the children’s excited little faces when they skipped off to find their next envelope, and their pride when they returned with their completed sheet, full of colourful stickers.

Each child was rewarded with a choice of fabulous prize – from toy mobile phones to water squirters and mini ice lolly makers.

Despite an initial downpour which looked like it could spoil the day, the sun soon came out, and made the day just perfect for local families.

Don’t miss the Festival Celebrations today and tomorrow!

“ This is a once in a lifetime celebration,” says Vicky Abel, project development officer at the city council. “And we want the whole of Bristol to come along and join in the celebrations.

“ The Downs play a very special role in the cultural and environmental life of the city. And over the years, The Downs have become a place for people to get together and have fun. It could be a football match, people out walking the dog, children flying a kite or fun runners raising hundreds of pounds for charity.

The celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Downs are a chance for us all to say ‘thank you’ to those who have looked after – and continue to look after – The Downs and ensure The Downs remain a green jewel in the city’s crown.”

Jack Penrose, chairman of Friends of The Downs and Avon Gorge (FODAG), added: “ The Friends are passionate about The Downs and keen to welcome new members.  FODAG are delighted with the programme of activities to mark this special day and proud to be a part of the celebrations. “There’s a good mix of historical, environmental and cultural activities on offer, so I’m sure the day will be a great success.”

Arena Arts Festival Success

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Congratulations to the volunteers from the Arena Arts Festival group, who organised a fabulous free Arts Festival at Abbeywood Community School on Saturday 30th April.

Supported by Matters Magazines and with financial assistance from South Gloucestershire Council, Bradley Stoke Town Council and Stoke Gifford Parish Council, the event proved popular with children and adults alike. Many of the workshops proved extremely popular and were fully booked. Visitors enjoyed dance and drama sessions, performances and workshops in orchestra and colourguard as well as street dance and guitar. A Rock ‘n’ Roll workshop gave participants an understanding of the history of Rock and and puppet workshop showed even the youngest children how realistic puppets can be made from scrap materials. The whole event, which ran from 10am to 4pm, provided a great opportunity for adults and children to sample something new, and to gain a greater appreciation of different forms of the Performing Arts.

We look forward to seeing this event repeated next year and we will once again be happy to give our support!

Friends of Jubilee Green Praised For “Fabulous” Easter Celebration

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

Over fifty children took part in today’s Bunny Egg Hunt at Jubilee Green, following last year’s equally popular Easter event. Local families were impressed to be offered a whole morning of fun activities in and around the park, all at no charge. Parents expressed their thanks for a fabulous morning, whilst one look at the childrens’ smiles revealed that the schedule of events had hit the mark for them too.

On arrival at the park from 10am onwards, children of all ages were offered paper and pens to enable them to take part in the Bunny Egg Hunt – in which they had to find and name the ten bunnies hidden throughout the park. Prizes were awarded to everyone who completed the challenge! With bottomless refreshments on tap – very kindly provided by Starbucks at Aztec West – the youngsters then had a chance to make Easter Crowns, bumble bees and/or decorated ‘eggs’ using a fabulous collection of arts and crafts materials sourced from the popular ‘Scrapstore’ in Bristol.

Crown making activities culminated in a musical Easter bonnet parade around the park, with 3 winners each receiving a chocolate easter egg. All other entrants received a consolation prize, so everyone was kept happy.

After time for some final arts and crafts and a few more refreshments, the event ended with parents commenting what a great sense of community we have in Bradley Stoke.

12 year old Michael told us “It was awesome – a really brilliant event. I especially liked the creative activities and am pleased with the crown that I made. Amahna, 7, said she most enjoyed finding the rabbits around the park. Their parents commented that they really appreciated having the Starbucks coffee being served and that the children had enjoyed the Teddy Tombola.

We would like to say ‘well done and thank you’ to Michelle and Helen from the Friends of Jubilee Green who organised this fantastic community event, and who work so hard for the benefit of others.

The Mall Fountain Fund Awards Grant To Friends of Jubilee Green

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

2 Trustees from Bradley Stoke’s Friends Of Jubilee Green, Michelle Dent and Alison Davis, today attended a Tea Party at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway, to accept a cheque for £397 from Quartet who administers the Mall Fountain Fund Charity.

Michelle, Chair of FOJG, said “We applied to the Fund at the end of last year and we were delighted to be chosen as one of just 12 charities to be selected for a grant this year.” The donation will be used towards the group’s ‘Enablement Project’ which will enable the volunteers to use the professional services of a South Glos Council Landscape Architect to professionally plan and cost three of proposed projects: Developing of the pond; a Willow tunnel ‘fence’ and a Community Garden. This professional planning and costing is essential to be able to secure the funding needed to deliver these projects for the local community. The Friends of Jubilee are very grateful for this grant, which will mean that the Enablement Project can now go ahead.

Each year the fountain at The Mall has thousands of pounds worth of coins thrown into it by visitors. The Fountain Fund charity was established in 2003, with the aim of supporting local charitable organisations within a 25 mile radius of The Mall. This year, the charity awarded 12 grants, with a combined value of £10,000.

Successful applicants included Year 8 Quinn James, a pupil at Henbury School, who applied for a grant to set up an indoor scooter park at his local youth club, with the help of his friend Jordan Hudd and youth worker Peter de Boer. The 12 year old was the only child at the tea party, but nevertheless was confident enough to tell the group about his plans. He received a cheque for £998. There were also grants for Crossroads Care, 1625 Independent People, St Paul’s Carnival and many more local deserving causes.

Michelle Dent, Chair of FOJG is shown accepting the group’s cheque from Stephen Prsons, Chairman of The Quartet Foundation and Maria Crayton, Head of Marketing at The Mall.

Bradley Stoke Community Radio Gearing Up for Live Broadcast !

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Bradley Stoke Community Radio are now gearing up for the live broadcast.  Friends at BCfm 93.2 have provided their expertise, training, support and encouragement to put the BSCR team in a position where they now have the skills (well almost) to broadcast live. BCfm 93.2 are a talented bunch – check out their website for a glimpse at the level of service they provide. BSCR members who received training from BCfm last month are now cascading this training to the latest Bradley Stoke Radio members.

Want to help but don’t have any spare time? There are still a few equipment needs which could be fulfilled by spending more of the grant and sponsorship money received to date. However, if you or anyone you know has recently acquired a new computer and are wondering what to do with the old one… BSCR would be particularly grateful for USB mice and keyboards, a couple of screens and an external hard drive or two.

Want to help and do have some spare time? For every presenter who is in front of the microphone at least one person is needed behind the scenes. The organisation required to put a radio station together is quite staggering and as the broadcast gets closer, this work (all being done by volunteers) is starting to pile up. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:* Marketing * Press Releases * A Treasurer * Newsletter Production Person * Another ‘Finance’ Person * Advertising Coordinator * Meeter/Greeters * Event Organisers and people to man the stand at events.

In the next few weeks the team expect to have ‘online-streaming’ capability – simply put, that means an internet radio service can be provided that runs 24/7, 365 days of the year. The person responsible for this will need a small team to make sure this next stage of the website development is successful!!

The members of the Bradley Stoke Community Radio Association would like to thank all their supporters and sponsors to date and look forward to welcoming more interested people to team …. watch this space for updates!

For more information and details on how to get in touch with the team see their website.

Bradley Stoke Matters is very pleased to be supporting Bradley Stoke Community Radio.

Free Arts Festival

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Matters Magazines is delighted to be supporting a first-of-its-kind free Arts Festival taking place at the end of April.

The event has been organised by local Arts Development Group, Arena – which was set up to promote the arts in Stoke Gifford, Bradley Stoke, Patchway and Filton. Thanks to funding from South Gloucestershire Council, Bradley SToke Town Council, Stoke Gifford Parish Council, Rolls Royce and John Lewis, there will be some fantastic workshops provided free of charge to all participants.

The workshops are diverse, with a classical concert orchestra sharing the same platform as a rock ‘n’ roll group, pre-school drama and puppet workshops. The aim of the day is to give people a broader understanding of the performing arts, and to be encouraged to take up an instrument or to join a dance group. All the workshops are being provided by local people who are professionally qualified musicians, dancers and teachers.

Advance booking is strongly advised. See here for full details.

Bristol Aztec Rotary In The Swim

Monday, March 14th, 2011

On Saturday 5th March just before 7pm, several groups of people gathered at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.  They were experiencing various degrees of apprehension, nervousness or suppressed excitement for they were all entered into the Bristol Aztec Rotary annual swimathon.  The aim of the swimathon was for a team to swim as many lengths of the pool as possible in hour.  Each individual had tried hard to raise as much sponsorship as possible and each team’s proceeds were to be split between the Rotary Club and a charity of the team’s own choosing.

The swimming took place in two, two hour sessions, timed, monitored and recorded by Rotary Club members.  Eight teams took part with promising names such as, “City Sinkers,” “Flippers,” and “Ginny’s Bad Girls.”  Other team’s names either reflected the purpose of the effort such as, “Novi Survat,” a charity dedicated to relieving the effect of extreme poverty among the poor of Goa or the names in some instances mentioning the team’s origin, for example Thornbury Air Cadets, Baileys Birds (Baileys Court School) or Bradley Stoke Small Business Forum.

Every team swam really well and clocked up plenty of lengths for charity.  Ginny’s Bad Girls turned out to be not so bad after all with the highest total of 134 lengths to their credit.  All in all the evening was great fun and enjoyed by everyone; and once all the money is in and counted we hope that Bristol Aztec Rotary will have raised a substantial contribution to go towards the new MS Centre to be built in Bradley Stoke.

Outstanding Local Women Recognised at International Women’s Day

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

In honour of the Global Centenary of International Women’s Day (1911-2011) Southern Brooks organised a colourful fun-filled event on Tuesday night at Bradley Stoke Community School. A wine and canapé reception included viewing the nominations for the three categories of Outstanding Women’s Awards, as well as submissions to the Visual Arts Gallery.  There were other local information stalls to browse while music was played by the school’s Samba band.

A fabulous fashion show based upon British Historical Fashion highlighted the dress of famous women from Jane Austen and Emily Panchurst to Mary Quant. These historical icons were represented by some of the girls from local singing group Raise Your Voice, who later in the show sang two songs highlighting the beauty of ALL women.

Demonstrations of African head wrapping and a Sari wrap proved very popular with the audience.

The main fashion show was launched, highlighting flamboyant and multi-coloured Indian, African and East Asian styles.  The audience and all the local ladies and young girls drawn in from the community to model for the show had a great time.

Nominations for Outstanding Women’s Award:

Personal Achievement Award: Wendy Shore, Mary Abrahams and Carly Trimby.  Young Woman’s Award: Georgina Evans, Emily Slocombe and Brenda Hook.  Community Award: Kandis Ip, Rene Thorne, Fran Read, Sylvia Leavy, Sharon Osborn, Rebecca Strong, Ruth Smale, Veronica Obee, Janine Smith,  Pauline Underwood, Margaret Davies, Stephanie Gill, Pat Hutton, Amenia Koosaar and Elspeth Desmond.

The Winners Are:

Personal Achievement: Mary Abrahams – Mary is the mother of BSCS student Ryan Abrahams who sadly passed away last year. Mary also lost her father at around the same time. Mary was nominated for her courage and bravery over the past 12 months and for somehow maintaining her cheerfulness, despite her dreadful losses. She has since commenced work at BSCS alongside friends of her son and has been working hard at fundraising for both the Children’s Hospital South West and the Jessie May Trust. Mary won the prize donated by the Aztec Hotel of dinner, bed and breakfast at the hotel.

Young Woman: Brenda Hook – Brenda has not allowed the fact that she has a number of serious medical conditions deter her from seeking out the positive things in life. She has contributed much back into the community through her voluntary work with Beavers and through five years of committed training with St John’s Ambulance, which recently earned her the very prestigious “Grand Prior Award”. Brenda won £100 of gift vouchers for the Mall, donated by Bradley Stoke Matters.

Community: Sylvia Leavy – at 81 years young Sylvia is evidence indeed that keeping busy keeps you young!  Despite her own advancing years Sylvia is involved in many community projects to help the elderly, including Patchway Day Centre, Langdale Sheltered Housing, the Friday Club and Merlin Housing Community Action Group. She is a true servant, setting tables, serving meals, making drinks, tidying up, doing the shopping, she even organised a seated excercise class! She constantly organises lifts and shared taxis for others to attend various groups and clubs, and individuals often call her rather than the taxi company to organise a ride. Not a day goes by without someone ringing her to do something for them. Sylvia also has a full social life herself – is out every day and at least 3 evenings a week.  Sylvia’s prize is a weekend bed and breakfast for 4 people donated by the Ramada Grange Hotel in Winterbourne.

Do look out for the opportunity to vote for the special women in your life in next year’s awards.

Following the awards was a fantastic performance by BSCS Year 10 drama student Courtney, who acted as Anne Frank in a thought-provoking monologue entitled “Dreams of Anne Frank”.

The evening was concluded with a brief presentation from Michelle and Helen from The Friends of Jubilee Green. Michelle and Helen highlighted the projects for which fundraising is being targeted and the ways the park will be improved. They also shared their plans for some of the events that will take place at the park over the forthcoming months (check out our community pages for more information), and emphasised the need for more volunteers to come forward and join in the fun!

Claire Emery, Chair of Governors at BSCS said “These awards encapsulate what community spirit is all about”.
