Wheatfield Primary School

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Wheatfield had a very special visitor today – Mr Jack Lopresti, our local MP. Mr Lopresti joined them for their Friday morning Celebration Assembly during which the Bike It! crew gave a road safety presentation and the choir gave a fantastic rendition of ‘Sing’ – the Jubilee Song.

Mr Lopresti also  spent time being quizzed about his roles and responsibilities as an MP by the School Council.  At the start of the day he walked along Wheatfield Drive with 2 of the school governors to review the issues with the flow of traffic and parking in the local area and promised to convey any concerns to the Local Authority.  Later in the day Mr Lopresti tweeted that the highlight of his visit was presenting the ‘Golden Boots Award’ to 5R.

Local Schools Celebrate Book Launch

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Students at local primary schools in South Gloucestershire had their very own book launch in Waterstones Cribbs Causeway this week.

The book, “Gathering of the Winds” was created by artists Matthew Jeanes and Martin Maudsley along with pupils from St Chad’s Patchway, Charborough Road, Callicroft, Holy Family, Coniston, Wheatfield, Meadowbrook and St Michaels Stoke Gifford as part of the Fusion Festival organised by Patchway Community College and funded by Arts Council England. The stories were inspired by the Olympic Windsurfing and Sailing events in Portland and Weymouth, with the children inventing “Windy” characters, personifications of the wind, with wonderfully vivid results.

Richard Headon, the Artistic Director for the South West Weymouth Olympic events, spoke at the launch and said that: “The Gathering of the Winds book was exactly the sort of project we hoped would be created as part of the SW region wide Cultural Olympiad ‘Battle for the Winds’ celebration of the Olympic sailing at Weymouth and Portland in 2012. Both the artists and the school children involved really embraced the theme of the gathering the winds. Martin and Matt really inspired the children to create some wonderful windy tales illustrated by some fantastic and energetic images. It was great to be able to connect local young people with such a prestigious and international event.”

Impressed by the quality of the book itself, Waterstones in The Mall at Cribbs Causeway held the launch where Martin Maudsley will be told some of the stories written to local children. The event was also attended by Headteachers and Govenors of the school involved who agreed that they were incredibly proud of the work that has been produced and of being involved another legacy created from the 2012 Olympics.

Queen of Wheatfield Arrives in Style!

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Imogen Roberts sent us this report on the Jubilee Celebrations at Wheatfield Primary School, along with this fabulous montage of photos taken on the day.  What a brilliant day!

“On Thursday 31st May, Wheatfield School celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in true Wheatfield style!

To start the day, the whole school gathered on the playground with flags to welcome their special visitor…the Queen!

The Queen of Wheatfield School (Miss Dursley, the Headteacher) arrived chauffer driven by Miss Dixon’s Dad in his Morris Minor!  The children warmly welcomed the special visitor, bowing and curtseying as she greeted them. Matthew (RC) said to his teacher, “I know that voice!” and Yusef (RC) exclaimed, “The Queen sounds just like Miss Dursley!”

As the ‘Queen of Wheatfield’ took to her throne, everyone stood to sing the National Anthem accompanied by Yuqi (6AH) on the piano. Each Year Group entertained her with ‘something typically British’. Everyone did a brilliant job and acts included a Madness song by Year 2, and a Beatles medley from Year 6. Everyone sang ‘My Queen’ a song adapted for the occasion.

Each child received an engraved medal, partly funded by the Friends of Wheatfield to commemorate both the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.

To finish the day the children had a Street Party in the hall, with Jubilee cake, biscuits and ice-cream. Charlotte (RC) remembered, ‘I liked the Street Party because we got to eat lots of food!’

It certainly was a day to remember, one to go down in our Wheatfield History book!”

Thank you Imogen for sharing your memories of the day.  I sure you will remember it for many years to come!

New Bradley Stoke Crossing

Monday, June 20th, 2011

A new Bradley Stoke crossing brings a safer route to school for Wheatfield pupils, though drivers can expect minor delays during the installation.

Work started today on Bradley Stoke’s newest pedestrian crossing, on Brook Way just north of the mini roundabout at the junction with Wheatfield Drive.

£20,000 has been allocated by the Southern Brooks Area Forum to install a raised speed table across the full width of Brook Way, as part of the Wheatfield Primary School travel plan which identified difficulties for pupils and their carers crossing Brook Way at busy times.

As part of the Bradley Stoke Urban Safety Project between 2000 and 2001 Brook Way was ‘traffic calmed’ with speed cushions, but some residents have questioned their effectiveness. It is hoped that the new Brook Way crossing will not only make it safer for Wheatfield pupils and other pedestrians to cross Brook Way, but also encourage more walking to school and reduce the number of cars used in the school run.

During the installation work, two-way temporary traffic signals will be used to control traffic on the Brook Way. South Gloucestershire Council say that some minor delays for drivers are inevitable. The estimated completion date is 1st July.

Wheatfield’s Wild about Nature! Launch Event this Saturday 26th March

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

The local community around Wheatfield Primary School in Bradley Stoke are being invited to join pupils, staff and parents from 11 am this Saturday, 26th March, to celebrate the launch of a new one year project that will help improve the local environment and enhance the area for wildlife. The project has received a grant of £9,450 from the Big Lottery Fund and £2,500 from the ‘Friends of Wheatfield School’.

The Mayor of Bradley Stoke, Cllr Ben Walker, will officially launch the start of the project by sending families off on a special ‘Bike it’ ride around the Town’s local nature reserve. Within the school grounds there will be an opportunity to get involved in a spring time treasure hunt and to build your own bird box and feeder. There’s also a chance to sow a sunflower seed and enter the tallest sunflower in Wheatfield’s competition! Refreshments and BBQ will also be available throughout the event.

“Building on our Outdoor Play and Learning Project, our school aims to embark on an exciting journey which will engage pupils, parents and our local community in a range of innovative projects that will see our local environment improved, benefiting wildlife and people’s well being”; commented Chris Dursley , Headteacher of Wheatfield Primary School. She added, “Starting with a launch event, we will invite local residents to come along and join our year long project, allowing us a unique opportunity to open the doors of our school to local residents to share in planned activities throughout the four seasons!”

Cllr Ben Walker, Mayor of Bradley Stoke, welcomed the funding and the innovative project that aims to make closer links with local residents and the school. He said “It’s wonderful to see our local schools taking an active part in helping to improve our local environment and getting children involved in educating parents on how to ‘green up’ our gardens is a fantastic idea!”.

John Morris, local resident and Chairman of a local community allotment, who helped secure the funding said, “The project includes making bird boxes and feeders for the school grounds and people’s gardens, hedge laying and dry stone walling training courses, so local householders can manage native hedges in their own gardens. We’ll also be focusing on a wildlife gardening project, raising people’s awareness of slug pellet free gardens, benefiting hedgehogs and frogs and creating wildflower meadows”.

The scheme will see the school work with a local conservation group to improve two local ponds, create new benches from carved timber and develop a mini nature trail. There will be activities throughout the year for the school and its wider community to participate in, including a special Apple Day event in October.

For further information on how you can get involved please call Wheatfield School on 01454 868610.

Bradley Stoke Students To Host Charity Quiz Night

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Three BSCS students are hosting a Quiz Night this month, in a bid to raise much-needed funds towards their forthcoming ‘World Challenge’.

Alex, Sam and Joel each need to raise £3,000 for their World Challenge to Cochin in India later this year. Joel, whose fundraising activities have closely been followed by Bradley Stoke Matters since he started his fundraising quest last year, has already amassed a staggering £2,500. His peers, Sam and Alex have each raised over £1,000 but still need your support to help them reach their target.

This month’s Quiz Night builds on the success of their similar event held in June of last year, and will take place at Wheatfield Primary School from 7pm on 28th January.

Entrance is £5 per person on the night, which includes your first drink (wine or soft drink) plus nibbles on the tables. Please come as a team – from 2 people up to a maximum of 8 per team. You will be treated to an entertaining multi-media quiz – which promises to provide a fun night out.

Bradley Stoke’s Olympic Run

Raring to go! The beginning of the 'Olympic Run' around Bradley Stoke

In celebration of National Sports Week and to promote working closely with their neighbouring schools, Bradley Stoke Community School organised two Olympic Runs on the afternoon of Thursday 1st July.

PE Teacher Ed Owen and seven Year 9 students ran with two specially hand-made ‘olympic torches’ to each of Bradley Stoke’s six primary schools in turn. Abbie Pearce, Duncan Bendall, Manga Ndlovu, Kate Brown, Sean Fahay, Jamie Williams and Will Macaulay set off from BSCS at 1.30pm on their 6+mile challenge.

Pupils and staff at St Mary’s Primary School gave the group a fabulous loud welcome, with cheers and by forming a human horseshoe for the runners to perform a lap of honour. The entourage collected two St Mary’s pupils, Tasha Draper and Nathan Hall, both in year 6, plus a chaperone , and continued their run to Baileys Court. Pupils from Baileys Court lined both sides of their playing field, clapping and cheering and enabling the runners to arrive in style. The pace had been so fast that the group were ahead of schedule, so a few impromptu races were held between the secondary school pupils and between the St Mary’s and Baileys Court pupils. The crowd went wild!

Heidi Sermulins and George Curnock, both in year 6, joined the run at Baileys Court, and continued with the BSCS students on to Meadowbrook. As they rounded the corner the group could hear the enthusiastic clapping and cheerig, and they were welcomed onto the school field with a massive human circle to run through, lined on both sides by pupils. The olympic torches were passed on to Sadelle and Jack , both in year 5 who could not wait to start their leg of the journey.

At Wheatfield there was yet more cheering, plus an impresssive Mexican wave from the whole school on the playground. Not content with putting two children forward for the event, Wheatfield produced 5 runners: year 6 Adam Thorpe and Matthew Farrant; year 5 Rebecca Halford and Emily Smart plus year 4 Matthew Binding. All 5 enjoyed the 0.8 mile run to Holy Trinity (they had looked up the distance so knew what they were letting themselves in for!)

Sports Day was in full flow at Holy Trinity school when the group arrived, though this did not dampen the welcome given. The runners enjoyed a lap of honour inside a human circle on the playground, before picking up the new team members Dominic Williams-Sarkar and Tasha Okoye. At this stage the year 9 runners were beginning to tire, so the year 6′s had to be asked not to run too fast for fear of leaving the older pupils behind!

On arrival at Bowsland Green, the last of the 6 primary schools, year 9′s took the opportunity to lie down on the grass for 2 minutes – but were soon on their feet again taking part in a couple of sprinted laps around the playing field – much to the delight of all the onlookers. Tejaswi Tiruvuru and Ben Sayers, both in year 6, took the olympic torches and joined the team for the final leg of the challenge back to BSCS. By this time, everyone was grateful to PE teacher, Ian Henry, who showed them a short-cut down through the Three Brooks Nature Reserve.

The team arrived back at BSCS to cheers from fellow students just after 3pm – well ahead of schedule and enthused by the experience. Tejaswi from Bowsland Green summed up everyone’s thoughts when she said “That was tiring but great fun!”

Bradley Stoke Matters followed the whole event with a camera (by bike) and you can see a range of photos of the whole challenge on our flickr album.

Wheatfield Pupils

Wheatfield Pupils set the pace for BSCS students to keep up!

At the same time a Senior Olympic Run took place, with BSCS pupils and a member of staff taking their own olympic torch between the schools in the Concorde Partnership – from Bradley Stoke to Patchway, to Filton High and back to BSCS.

The events were a great success, and culminated in a joint schools cross country festival in the late afternoon involving pupils in years 3 to 6. Congratulations to Dena Young and Ed Owen for organising such a great day!

We are pleased to have posted a full set of photographs depicting the challenge from beginning to end on our Flickr photo album. Do feel free to have a browse.

Patchway Hosts Primary Pupils’ Music Day

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Schools join forces for music performance

Local primary school pupils enjoyed a music day at Patchway Community College on Thursday 24th June.

Year 5 pupils from Meadowbrook and Wheatfield joined year 4 and 5 pupils from Stoke Lodge for a whole day of

rehearsing songs and music, organised by Mrs Munroe of Patchway Community College. The day culminated in a one hour after-school performance involving all the children, which was well-attended by parents and families.

This is the second year that Patchway has run the joint schools music activity, and plans are in place to make this an annual event. Mrs Munroe praised the pupils for their excellent behaviour throughout the day, and for their fantastic performance.

Annabelle, year 5 at Meadowbrook said “It was great fun spending a whole day on music and singing, and I enjoyed making friends with children from other schools.”
